Model aircraft MOR system

#1 Post by CharlieOneSix »

Just had an email from the British Model Flying Association. UK model aircraft operators are now bound by the Mandatory Occurrence Reporting (MOR) scheme just as full size aircraft operators. In addition to the usual requirements a reportable occurrence happens if a flight goes beyond the visual line of sight of the remote pilot
Under the Article 16 authorisation that BMFA members can operate under it is a legal requirement to report certain occurrences to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB), some occurrences will also need reporting to the BMFA insurers.
It's those wretched irresponsible drone pilots who invaded LGW and LHR airspace a while back who have prompted this regulation for all model aircraft fliers. I thought I'd got the CAA off my back when I retired but they now take me for a £9 annual fee for my registration as an operator - at least it's cheaper than an ATPL issue!

I'm sure all those responsible operators will gladly offer up an indiscretion.

What are the usual requirements of reporting?

Still catching up after a couple of hectic days - the reporting requirements are:

SERIOUS INCIDENTS – defined as an occurrence where there was a high probability of an ACCIDENT associated with the operation of the aircraft.

Any SERIOUS INCIDENTS or other OCCURRENCES which involve;

Operating above 400ft
Operating less than 50m from uninvolved people

Any ACCIDENTS where:

a person is fatally or seriously injured;
the aircraft sustains damage or structural failure in operation which results (or may result) in endangering;
the aircraft goes missing or becomes completely inaccessible in manner which could result in endangering;

It is also a requirement to report any instances of flights which go beyond the visual line of sight of the remote pilot.
