Boeing in yet another technical pickle!
Re: Boeing in yet another technical pickle!
I wonder how well the A320/A350 production lines are doing?
Re: Boeing in yet another technical pickle!
Southwest and Brazil's GOL have grounded 13 737NGs due to the cracks.
Re: Boeing in yet another technical pickle!
Bloomberg today reporting over 5% failure rate. Anyone for really cheap Boeing shares?

Re: Boeing in yet another technical pickle!
The problem is significant as you say.
More on the Boeing pickle...Boeing shares fell 1% to close at $371.00 on Thursday.... Raymond James analyst Savanthi Syth wrote in a research note Thursday that the findings from the 737 NG inspections could "potentially take up to 4% of capacity off-line between mid-Oct and mid-Dec."
Planes with cracks "may need to be taken out of the fleet for up to 60 days for maintenance," Syth said.
The FAA last week said inspections would look for "cracking of the left and right hand side outboard chords of frame fittings and failsafe straps."
It added that the cracking "could adversely affect the structural integrity of the airplane and result in loss of control of the airplane."
Aircraft with more than 30,000 cycles must be inspected within seven days, while planes between 22,600 and 29,999 cycles must be inspected within 1,000 cycles, which typically correspond to the number of flights. In total, 1,911 U.S. 737 NGs are covered by the FAA directive.

Re: Boeing in yet another technical pickle!
Given the ailerons are in the wings a structural failure would make control difficult.could adversely affect the structural integrity of the airplane and result in loss of control of the airplane
The previous report mentioned 35,000 cycles and checks every 3,500. I thought that exact 10% was a finger in the air figure though Fox disagreed. The figures above are rather more exact.
I wonder if the 22,600 figure will kick in as soon as it is reached, ie an inspection before 23,600 which fits in with the maintenance schedule. Similarly as soon as the 29,999 cycles is reach it must be inspected within 7 days.
What is happening world wide?

Pucker.
Mostly in the boxes in the Fugly Building in Lime Street, but also elsewhere.
Puckering of sternal sphincters. Tight tight puckering.
Most particularly amongst those of us who used to be called names.

Boeing move Muilenburg sideways
Muilenburg in the aloha lounge...Boeing’s Board of Directors separated the roles of company chairman and CEO on Friday, removing Dennis Muilenburg from the position of chairman but emphasizing that he will remain Boeing’s president, CEO, and director. Independent lead director David Calhoun was elected to serve as non-executive chairman. According to the board, separating the roles will “enable Muilenburg to focus full time on running the company as it works to return the 737 MAX safely to service, ensure full support to Boeing’s customers around the world, and implement changes to sharpen Boeing’s focus on product and services safety.”
“The board has full confidence in Dennis as CEO and believes this division of labor will enable maximum focus on running the business with the board playing an active oversight role,” said Calhoun. “The board also plans in the near term to name a new director with deep safety experience and expertise to serve on the board and its newly established Aerospace Safety Committee.”

What the Colonel really meant "We are soon going to find a Director who actually understands something about safety but meanwhile we are going to watch M. like a hawk."“The board has full confidence in Dennis as CEO and believes this division of labor will enable maximum focus on running the business with the board playing an active oversight role,” said Calhoun. “The board also plans in the near term to name a new director with deep safety experience and expertise to serve on the board and its newly established Aerospace Safety Committee.”

Re: Boeing in yet another technical pickle!
I agree with both Boing and Pontius Navigator that Mr Muilenburg's career prospects look as dim as the light bulb in his new office there in the aloha lounge at Boeing (as in the the goodbye part of the meaning of aloha).
It sounds like there needs to be a root cause analysis at management and senior executive level and I am sure that Mr Muilenburg is not the only one who should be censured for these egregious failings. As usual in corporate life the guilty will be the ones pointing fingers and creating smoke screens.

Re: Boeing in yet another technical pickle!
I am now seriously wondering if the 'simplest' solution for Boeing (assuming the MCAS issue remains and the issue of the power of the smaller trim wheel can be solved) would be to remove MCAS, re-work the engine pylons etc and re-engine as 'updated' NGs?
Is that crazier than where they are now?

Wrap a rope around the trimwheel and run the nether end all the way down the aisle and yell at the passengers "Heave!"

Recalls the old story of the two bits of string coming out of the cockpit under the door?

In a Hastings, handed to a Pongo Capt in an aisle seat, with the instructions from the pilot, to 'hold these steady' while I go to the loo!

Looks like the Grenfall fire, and many other things these days - complete meltdown of almost every element of the system thanks to corner-cutting by accountants, blatant ignoring of safety rules, management who don't care a whit and can't be prosecuted, all covered up by PR.
