A double-take on this photo!

#1 Post by Boac » Wed Sep 23, 2020 7:54 am

Photoshop is good! https://robbreport.com.my/2020/09/23/ai ... -hydrogen/

There is also a 'video' of the formation in flight. Clever cgi.

Fascinating stuff but one does have to ask how carbon neutral the energy required to produce the hydrogen is?

Canada geese and many birds will be pointing out that they patented the formation flying idea.

What happened to the Hindenburg?

Hydrogen production can be pretty carbon-neutral, solar cells and electrolysis of water. Of course, making the solar cells and infrastructure and the hydrogen tanks is definitely not carbon-neutral in itself.

As for the Hindenburg, that was using it for buoyancy, I assume that for combustion use it would be in a pretty tough tank and not liable to combust in the presence of an accidental spark. Might even be safer in an accident compared to liquid fuel which would flow and ignite over a wider area, assuming the tank didn't explode due to pressure, and if it did leak, you weren't walking in the line of the flame (hydrogen flame is invisible). I assume fire crews would want to have IR goggles to check that sort of thing.

Well, it's been tried before, so unless the physics has changed.....

Lockheeds attempt, by Kelly Johnson no less was called SUNTAN.

Lockheed CL-400 Suntan

By advancing the state of the art in LH2 propulsion, and by establishing an industrial infrastructure for high-volume hydrogen production, the groundwork was laid for successful use of liquid hydrogen as a liquid rocket propellant for the Apollo program and the Space Shuttle.

The existence of the CL-400 was not fully disclosed to the public until the 1970s, when Lockheed discussed the possibility of using hydrogen as an alternative fuel for future aircraft.
