SIN - HEL question...

#1 Post by Fliegenmong » Fri Nov 11, 2016 1:04 pm

Flew SIN-HEL recently...with FINNAIR, nice little airline been around forever, and in the jet age a safety record as good as QANTAS,,etc etc..

But somewhere over Khazahkstan or Russia...and I'm thinking more Russia, I experienced a visual trickery.....still at 39 thou ft with a few hours to run into Helsinki, I was staring out the window, looking down and obsereved what appeared to be a very strong spotlight in what appeared to be a 'compound' of sorts, it was as though the compound was about 10 000ft below, and the searchlight I observed was very strong, and lasted a good 10 minutes, searchlight seemingly following us along, and whilst I could seemingly make out stuff like I was at 10 thou ft.....I knew we were at around 39....strange illusion indeed...and as I do not often fly a route like this, was wondering what this illusion was?? It was indeed an illlusion for certain.

I mentioned it tonight to Mrs Fliegs...and she recalls seeing the same..

So dear fellow Ops -Normal Folk....what was this (military?) base, and what was the illusion to make it look so near?

Last time I flew as SLF with Finnair, 'twas in Caravelle.

Being Ancient I have of course also flown Caravelle. First flight at age 15, Tromsø - Oslo.
I remember the noise, and the sexy stewardesses. :D

My 1st flight, also at 15, was an Avro Anson, air experience flight at RAF Lynham.
1st flight with a stewardess was 10 years later, BUA trooper Stanstead to Nicosia.
The only cabin staff I saw in between were Transport Command AQM's, all male.
When I was at Istres we used to do deals with them, they brought out bacon and sausage and we gave them whiskey and nicked their sliced loaves.

*Fliegenmong* I have a vague memory of this being covered a while ago (years) in TOP, needs a search.
