We had unique service numbers!
A number that is never forgotten for the rest of one's life.
Engraved on the brain, if not the heart.

And the first four or last three numbers are used as passwords or pin codes!

Not the 1st 4, the whole entry had the same digits!

You joined as a National Serviceman, at Cardington after 1953.
You had not been a member of the ATC.
Your number tells secrets!

More than 50 years ago, (I estimate 1968) I bought some 'Unwearoutable' socks from a shop in our village.
I still have them (and wear them) - though they are wearing thin.

I understand it's the laundering as much as anything. If you never wash them they last twice as long, or so I've been told. Plus the odor wards off ground-born Corona virus.

Close.
Don't worry, I don't use a any part of it as a PiN number, but I agree, it is the only number I can remember without having written it down.
Corrrection ... I can also remember the number of my Father's 1935 Morris 8 car. AKB 878 ( and yes, that was a Liverpool registration)
But .... what's the number of my friend John, whom I have known for the last 10 years ?

When I was working I 'knew' the telephone numbers of at least a dozen contacts (days before electronic telephones with memories.
Now I struggle to remember the number of my mobile 'phone, and internet passwords are impossible to remember.
I can, however, still remember the registration number of our first car (at least the one that my father got when I was aged 3), the one that we inherited from my grandfather when he died when I was aged 7, and the two subsequent new cars that my father bought (and my first car at age 17).

When I was at school I had various combination locks I used to lock my bike. I still remember those.

Blame modern phones among other things. Who knows their mobile phone number?

Who knows
any number? Calls are made using stored numbers held against names.
Numbers are cached after receiving a call from someone - with their name thereafter appended and stored.

And give your number out at your peril. I received calls every day, sometimes 2-3 times, trying to get me to install a smart meter. As my phone is not surgically attached to my hand and is on silent I never answer. The one time she caught me i told her to ring my landline - she didn't.
The other one is trying to flog appliance insurance.

I have a work phone. Out of hours it sits on my desk at home on charge on mute. This works quite well. I rarely answer my personal phone if I don't recognise the number, unless I'm expecting a call or I'm bored enough to answer, I consider it to be a portable data terminal, not a voice device.

I know all my mobile phone numbers, have to, asked so often.
TD: last year in November we had a smart meter installed, compulsory in Spain. Just had the first reading, mid-November to mid-January. Two-and-a half times higher than the same period 2018-2019. House is the same, no more electrical gear, and we were away for 28 days each time. I am persnickety about turning stuff off while we are away, so WTF ? Letter gone to CEO..

I've read somewhere you have to put them in the deep freeze, and then shake the dirt off. Out of your window, presumably.
