BREXIT - A Poll & Discussion

Thinking of Clockwork Alex, too. There a part of his life where the sound of Beethoven's 9th made him physically sick.

llondel, I'm experiencing the same effect.
Every time l hear the "Ode to Joy" the vivid memories of the once-banned film "A Clockwork Orange" flood what's left of my mind!
A collection of 27 disparate countries cannot call itself one country so l doubt if any 'anthem' is going to bond them anymore closely especially after the recent MEP elections.
Far better to have remained seated and got on with whatever tasks are to be completed.
Instead they were all sent off (to the bar?) after a couple of non-productive hours.
Sooner we're outa there the better for all.

The Guardian has managed to associate the popularity of the Carry On movies with anti EU feelings!
So blame it all on Sid James, after all he was a South African.

South Africa was blamed for most things during apartheid, so why not now?

Typical of the Left to dig up an old scapegoat and kill it again. I suppose the lefty greens count it as recycling.

Re: BREXIT - A Poll & Discussion
If Russia turns the gas off, the UK lights go out tomorrow.
Russia's problem is they can't turn off the gas anymore. The US is producing more natural gas now than it can consume or store. It is in headlong development of LNG processing and shipping facilities to take it off its hands, and be well paid for it.
The energy world has changed, and the chess pieces of international energy politics have been turned upside down by the revolution in US energy production and capacity to export at levels upsetting world markets for energy. Interestingly, there are several nations that could achieve energy independence and even export revenue through 'fracking', but the Greens won't let them.

Bollocks!
Very very little Russian gas is used in the UK power grid. If Russia was financially suicidal enough to turn off that money-mill, the load would instantly be taken up by Norwegian gas and by ffrench nuke wigglies.

Re: BREXIT - A Poll & Discussion
I made the point about low direct Russian exports to UK. According to the Norwegian State Gas website the exports and system capacities for gas are almost identical. That means there is little to no extra capacity to export more, which means a rapid price rise and inability to replace Russian supply, which is in any case more than Norway's total.
France is also operating near capacity for its nuclear plants. No new French plant has been built in 20 years, and therefore cannot supply anything like the large increase necessary to support a loss of Russian gas. The French system is currently running at 73% of theoretical capacity including current exports, but with practical capacity being about 90% availability factor (due to refueling and maintenance), France has about 90 TWh extra annual capacity at most. Russian gas exports to Europe are running at about 1600 TWh equivalent annually, of which the French could at most supply 6%.

Re: BREXIT - A Poll & Discussion
Great Shame Christopher Brooker has died.
As the first editor of Private Eye, it seems odd that given his opinion of the EU, that satirical rag has lurched firmly into the "Remain" camp and sneers at every opportunity at those who wish to leave the EU.
Bearing in mind his book "Castle of Lies" was published over two decades ago it's a pity more of our leaders didn't take time to digest the contents of that tome as the UK signed up to Maastricht and all the other steps were taken to march a truculent and reluctant public into the Union of Silly Socialist Republics a k a EU.
Also of assistance to anyone pondering how we got here is "The Great Deception", a long and dry work which also entered the defects in the great European Tech Log but led to NFF being the standard response.
Those who forget history..........?

Re: BREXIT - A Poll & Discussion
About 1% of gas consumed in the UK comes from Russia. 54% is imported, of which only 1% is from Russia, so altogether it's a bit less than 1%.
That's less than the day to day fluctuations in consumption and can easily be made up by increasing imports of Noggie gas and ffroggy wigglies. Also bear in mind that more gas fields around the Shetlands are being brought on stream.
The Russians are pretty reliable and quite sensible, so far. They did have that piss-head Yeltsin, but they currently don't have an equivalent of Shrub or Chump.
If Chump or a similar warmonger stirs the shitpot in the Straights of Hormuz, I think our imports of Qatari gas would be much more susceptible to a supply interruption that any prospect of Russia deciding that they don't want our money any more.

Re: BREXIT - A Poll & Discussion
Thanks for the Shetland update. My point is that the price of UK gas imports will rocket if Russia cuts off Europe, and supplies likely drop since the EU countries will then be waving money at Norway to buy their gas also.
I also rate the Russians' chances of cutting off Europe as very low at the moment, but gas supply pipelines can be cut in an hour. The capability is there. What I expect will happen is that Russia will use the threat of reducing supplies, increasing prices, or a cut-off to get their way behind the scenes. Obviously, the threat is best used in winter. It also doesn't look like Europe will have any alternatives for some time to come. And Russia has always been able to stir things up in the Sandpit, should it so wish. I expect at the moment that Russia wishes to consolidate de facto annexation of Crimea, and the Donbas is next on the list.

Re: BREXIT - A Poll & Discussion
UKUSA is certainly being very belligerent against Russia with massive and lavishly funded propaganda efforts by front agencies such as Integrity Initiative; Bellingcat; White Helmets; 77th Brigade; SOHR; et al, and the Septics really are crazy enough to bomb the pipelines which supply Europe with cheap and plentiful Russian gas so as to force the price up and force us to buy their otherwise unsellable fracked gas surplus.
The Russians on the other hand, are not at all crazy enough to cut themselves off from their most lucrative market.

Great stuff from Anne what !...that's the sort of representative the UK needs !.....and not forgetting Nige's dynamic leadership where the rest of the party turned their backs on the assembly and the music.....
Yep, that's the Brexit party for you...and Anne, bless her demented rant, so eloquently exemplifies the party perfectly.......and those who support it.

Re: BREXIT - A Poll & Discussion
Maybe if Anne Widdy and/or similarly feisty characters had been part of the so-called "negotiations" from day 1, we might not be in the current confused mess.
May & co should have arrived on day 1 and subsequently hammered home "play fair with us or we'll walk and you'll get no money"!
Instead we've grovelled, begged, submitted and ended up with a dog's dinner of an agreement.
At least Anne spoke in a language the man in the street would understand instead of the doublespeak to which we have been subjected for 3 years.

Re: BREXIT - A Poll & Discussion
Spot on, a fine speech and hopefully a precursor for very many more before the end of October. Fortunately it is now pretty much accepted that we will be gone either with or without a deal in October, despite the huffing and puffing of Odious Bercow and the duplicities of Gyppo Corbyn.Yep, that's the Brexit party for you...and Anne, bless her demented rant, so eloquently exemplifies the party perfectly.......and those who support it.
If, after watching the latest selection of EU leaders, anyone really still seriously thinks that we are better placed supporting the EU as a paying member then I'm much surprised.
Re: BREXIT - A Poll & Discussion
Just when I was getting used to peace and quiet in the cockpit, this odd whining noise starts up again.
Well done Anne! Great speech.

Defending the indefensible:

What a pity Andrew Neil is standing down from his politics show. He goes for the jugulars of both left and right wing politicians when he smells a rat, and he certainly smells some big rats in the choice of unelected criminals and assorted riffraff to positions of power. Even Drunker criticised the process and the way it was handled, but in his case there was probably some self-interest involved.
