Not an old Etonian, but well versed, through my various jobs, in how diplomacy works. If Herr Scholz wishes to make political point-scoring using the UK as his target, it says a lot more about him and the future of Germany than it does about Britain.

In any case, there is no fuel shortage, nor a shortage of drivers to deliver fuel. For the record, tanker drivers are paid significantly more than those who drive lorries full of toilet rolls. This whole thing has been stoked up by the media and the gullible British public has soaked it up in a repeat of the toilet roll frenzy earlier in the year.

Please do not compare me to Mr Johnson, or whatever his name is. I do not deserve that.

There is actually a global shortage of all sorts of things, mainly due to a lack of shipping and port capacity. That's the real reason stuff isn't arriving, and if you can't get the raw materials you can't make your product, so there's going to be a shortage of that too.

Boris is only still in charge because anyone who's smart enough to run the place has realised that at the moment it's damage limitation so they don't want to oust him yet, and the opposition is giving the appearance of being even more disorganised. Boris did the one thing he said he would, he got the UK out of the EU, but no one checked what else he was capable of.

Well of course the British public are gullible and prone to being led around by the media.

How else were they persuaded to support Brexit?

Jim, that is a non sequitur. The BBC, practically to a woman were remoaners. Many other influential media outlets, such as the Garudian, were also stauncher remainers.

And the Sun, Mail, Express and the Torygraph?

But these days admitted Leavers are as hard to find as litres of petrol.

Jim, while the Torygraph was indeed a fervent Brexiteer, as was its puppy, and no doubt likes to think of itself like the Times of old, I doubt it is popular with the majority Brexiteers.

Brexit was driven by the public not the media. Still is.

So Boris, the Sun, Mail, Express and Telegraph simply jumped on the bandwagon that the UK's , "Angry Brigade" got rolling?

Boris famously wrote two pieces, one supporting Remain, the other supporting Leave, and decided he liked the Leave one more and so came down on that side.

Had the UK managed to put together a competent negotiating team at the start, and had competent leaders at the top, things would probably have turned out a lot better. Had the Remainers accepted the result and worked for the best possible deal rather than try to sabotage it all, things might have been better. All water under the bridge now though, the people made their choices and the UK gets to live with the results.

The roots of Brexit were established generations before European unity was a twinkle in Napoleon's eye. The Kaiser and the Führer reinforced this and De Gaulle recognised it.
The media merely articulated this.
Where the EU did beneficial projects in UK, with our money, our politicians would claim the glory. Where the EU wasted money the media would proclaim this.
The media reflects the natural inclination of many Britons.
Equally many had wider visions and hope for a cohesive and friendly Europe.
How we feel about our neighbour is no different to how our neighbours feel about their own neighbours.

The roots of Brexit was the way Britain was taken into the EU.
The British people were never allowed a vote, and they didn't forget that.
I've heard that argument many times from people who voted for Brexit.
And every politician who tries to railroad the citizenry into anything needs to learn that lesson.
And so do the media.
Judging from the last couple of years, they haven't learned a dam thing.

According to the 'gospel according to Dom', he was largely responsible for the shambles that is Brexit. https://dominiccummings.substack.com/p/ ... rticle?s=w and BoJo was/?is? merely a hapless idiot on the bus.

Once again BoJo's lack of judgement strikes. With a spad like him, who needs an opposition? Yes, I fear we are 'doomed'.

It seems Germany is now panicking that it might lose its (imagined?) status of 'most important EU country' if Ukraine joins. I cannot quite figure that out............

Every country's doomed.
The key question is who hits the buffers first.
That gives the rest a bit of a Heads Up (although most will ignore it).

I've got this great idea. Why don't we run our countries independently and make agreements on a one to one basis. Simple and you know exactly where you stand.

No a realist. It is quite obvious from the history of the Common Market and other examples that there is never a "fair" distribution of power or wealth and the reaction times of a community to changing circumstances is measured in years not days as required. Look at the recent example of Covid, the vaccine production was a total fiasco in the Common Market countries complete with selfish distribution, unequal cost sharing and countries prioritising themselves instead of working for the group. Look at the disastrous Common Market agricultural policy. Look at the machinations of the banking system. A direct one-on-one agreement is easier to understand, more easily administered and much simpler to renegotiate should this be required.
