Well I was born there, prior to WWII on the North Yorkshire Riviera, a town called Redcar. Recently famous for a closed down steel works.

I served in the RAF from 1952 to 65, some of that might be considered work and some of it was in the UK. One unusual posting was to the RAF Liaison Party with the Armée de l'air, initially at Base Aérienne 125 Istres and latterly Base Aérienne 115 Orange-Caritat.

As a civilian, from 1965 to 1982, I was employed in the UK by a US company, in positions that caused me to travel quite a lot. In the UK, around Europe and to the USA. During those years I resided in London, Herefordshire, Monmouthshire, Gloucestershire, North Yorkshire and Worcestershire. The company then wanted me to return to central London, I declined their offer and moved to the SA subsidiary in 1982. Which caused me to travel less frequently, but when I did, it was usually longer journeys for longer periods.

Ssh ian, don't give the game away, of course the RAF was work! That's an fair career history, you will have seen a lot of the ups and downs in the UK political and economic scene during that time. No wonder you knew about the devolution offer made to the NE of England by the last Labour government.

More than a third of voters don't believe Brexit will happen. I am increasingly drawn towards thinking that it won't happen. From the start, I felt that the vote would be Remain, and after the close result, although I voted Leave and remain convinced that the UK should leave the EU and hopefully precipitate its demise, I do have some sympathy with those who are appealing against the outcome of the referendum. It will be interesting to see where this goes, but my money is on a substantial re-negotiation of the UK's terms of membership and possibly of the EU's modus operandi, but no 'Brexit'.

Kudos. My parents and relatives all volunteered to fight or contribute for Britain in both WW1 and WW2. My one Uncle was a Chindit. A Japanese sniper shot him, but he survived to the grand old age of 80+. Deaf as a doorpost due to his war years, yet he never received a penny compensation. My other Uncle was a rear gunner in Lancasters, missing presumed dead over Holland at 21. My grandparents just received a telegram about this. That's it. My father was first in to join the RAF, and fought in Egypt and Italy. My mother was a WAAF at 16. My aunts all worked in Armstrong's munitions factories in Newcastle. My grandfather fought in WW1 trenches.

Let's agree that working as a civilian here last in 1982 is not really current nor relevant in 2016 UK, hmm? You don't even live here. :O3

The queen (♕,♛) is the most powerful piece in the game of chess, able to move any number of squares vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Each player starts the game with one queen, placed in the middle of the first rank next to the king. Because of the value of a queen, it is sometimes used as bait to lure an opponent into a trap by a queen sacrifice. Another tactic is to use the queen to threaten the opponent's queen, to either retreat or to exchange the queen (losing both of them) to reduce the game to less powerful pieces. The queen is often used in conjunction with another piece, such as teamed with a bishop or rook, where the pieces could guard each other while threatening the opponent pieces.

It's all a game, Tom. :O3

Yet unlike you Lilly he was current enough to know of the regional referendum offered to the NE of England without having to resort to Wikipedia =))

Now perhaps you will enlighten us with your residency and employment record :O3 Second thoughts don't bother Lilly, I don't think it would be interesting or relevant.

"The queen (♕,♛) is the most powerful piece in the game of chess"
Exactly - you will oft hear voters as they cross off their ballot's whisper "now what would the Queen do?"

Your'e right Lilly it is a game - based on your knowledge of UK politics you do not get to pass Go, nor do you do collect £200 :O3

It's not just about age but there need to be qualifications to vote, based on education and achievement.

We used to do practice interviews for 18 year old Oxbridge candidates - only about 1 in 10 could sustain an argument about an opinion on a current events or moral topic of their choosing for longer than 3 responses. 9 out of 10 got into Oxbridge. They would all afterwards concur with the idea that the voting age should be raised to 21.

Best answer I was told of, by a 13 year old for a scholarship interview.

Q:"Do you think politicians should be honest, or clever?"
A:"I think politicians should be honest....when they are talking to us, and clever when they are talking to foreigners"

Now, she could have been given the vote at 13!

I don't think small bald men should be given the vote.

But tall baldies are OK?
Or shortarses with hair?

The way the PR machine works these days, small bald men don't get to run for office.

Actually, all small men should be banished to the circus where they belong. Clown shoes springs to my mind.
