Well......the US dropped a nuke on Hiroshima on 6 Aug; the Soviet Union declared war on Japan on 8 Aug and threatened invasion the following day ... which was the date of the bomb on Nagasaki and the Japs indicated they wanted to surrender on 10 Aug.

On the immediate post-war carve up, because the Soviet Union had actually declared war on Japan (but did effectively cock all), they won a seat at the carve-up table and grabbed the top slice of Korea. Presumably they knew that they were pretty safe as the Americans had done all the heavy lifting against the Japs and they could make territorial gains they'd been eying off for years with no effort at all. Machiavellian bastards them Soviets.

And the US has been trying to keep the south protected from invasion from the twats to the north ever since.

Here endeth the history lesson.

An impressive array of alternative facts!

So, let me understand: The transformation of South Korea from a medieval subsistence-focused society into a modern day powerhouse of industrial might, took place with the aid of Who?

Was it China? Russia? Japan?? Maybe NZ?

Easy to warp history isn't it? Especially for people who don't really know it.
And easy to belittle the US and the rest of the West. Big, easy targets.
It still remains that after WWII the Allies gave Germany back to The Germans, Japan back to the Japanese, all of Western Europe back to the Europeans and provided very substantial aid to all to turn them into social and economic successes with freedom galore. How many lives were paid to be able to do that?
Anyone willing to name any other winning powers who have done that in history? What did Russia do with their "liberated" lands in 1945 and after? I'd really like to know who your heroes are.

Well, BTANL, that's probably the reason why more and more Americans are starting to say "No more".
If the world wants the Chinese to take the lead now, so be it. We have plenty of problems to take care of at home -- perhaps we should divert our resources there.
Just keep in mind how things have turned out in the past.
And don't be point'n your Fatboy rockets this way, or it might be the last point'n.

America divided Korea and gave half of it to Stalin as part of an agreement for the USSR to join the war against Japan.
The USA was the most benevolent conqueror of all times and continues to be so! Just ask the native people of North America, the people of Afghanistan and of course the people of Iraq.

Why of course, Syngman Rhee and Kim Chang-ryong!

John, quick question - why are you living in NZ and not in your paradise of North Korea? It would do your blood pressure an awful lot of good by not having to come on here to defend the indefensible (mainly by having no internet, or even the power to fire up a computer - if you could actually buy one).

Yes, well the vast majority of the Native People of North America were wiped out by......Europeans.

You know, the same ethnicities that were so kind to the indigenous people of Oz and NZ.

Facts are such a bother, aren't they!

Those facts don't bother me at all as I know what they are and don't claim they are anything else.

It would be hilarious if not so tragic.....

The US and ROK responded to DPRK's very offensive and oh so naughty missile test by firing off a few of their own!!!

Once again, John Hill, you reveal a lack of geopolitical awareness and reactionary, reflexive anti-Americanism.

Just a thought - What if Kim calculated that his first nuke might be fired at NZ, which has repudiated the US umbrella as a no-nuke zone? It would certainly be safer to nuke Wellington than Honolulu, and maybe could even be carried out without retaliation. After all, what could NZ do about it? Even you might support the concept on principal.

Il badbadhaircut could claim it was a legitimate test to see if his missiles could hit something other than a large, random target of water.
