The problem is that the City is a state within a state. It is self-governing. It regulates itself. A little bit like the Vatican within Italy.
The Mayor of London is elected by the people. The Lord Mayor is not.
I think the UK is imploding from within.

The mechanism, and its effects, are explained quite well in this documentary:

Most Brits, and almost all Murricanes don't understand how the banking system works.
Most Brits, and almost certainly ALL Murricanes, are unaware that the City of London is not part of the United Kingdom. It's not even part of the EU.
Here's an excellent explainer, by Robert Werner. It tells us why we are terminally screwed.

The City is a county (the smallest by the way) of the United Kingdom, and hence is part of the EU. Until next year. Or not, as may be.

No.
The City was not qualified to apply for membership of the EU because it does not hold democratic elections. That's an immutable rule for the EU and the corporatocratic structure of the Corporation of London is inimical to democracy.
The City is not, and never ever has been, part of Britain or of the UK. William the Bastard tried and failed to conquer the City and it has ever since been separate from Britain and the UK. I think it was around 1070 that the paperwork for that status was signed off.

An Islington London friend just told us the headmistress of her child's school is closing it for the festival of Eid as it's a multicultural multifaith school. She's also banned packed lunches from containing pork. Needless to say certain parents are making sure of a high pork content in their kiddies take-to-school sarnies including BLTs and the occasional pork pie.
