This is Africa.
It is only happening because someone else, in this case UNICEF, is paying for it.

Down here we don't tend to see plastic sample sachets, but it evidently is a problem in the first world as highlighted by this article; https://news.sky.com/story/calls-for-en ... s-12141949
Interestingly most hotels and safari camps here bulk buy liquid soap, shampoo and moisturiser and decant into reusable containers. So I guess that is reducing the number of small one use plastic bottles that were always finding their way into your suitcase.

It's interesting but not surprising that coca cola are blaming the consumer for wanting to buy their products in plastic bottles as opposed to glass bottles or cans. But they could give the consumer no choice if they wanted to. Here in Maun Aquarite who produce reverse osmosis water and related water and soda products has started to sell water in recyclable glass bottles, refills plastic ones and takes back plastic bottles and sends them to be recycled. Their soda products now come in recyclable tin cans. Now if a third world country can be eco- friendly why can't the big multi nationals do the same?

Here we have a problem with cattle dying due to eating plastic waste. It seems that in the Emirates it is happening to camels; https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... eveal.html

While this research was carried out in India, I wonder how many other countries have the same situation?
Here they burn rubbish in remote areas and not so remote (such as behind the farm down river) and the smell is truly awful, But at least we don't have the situation massively magnified by large over populated cities and massive factories releasing toxins into the atmosphere.

There's a certain logic in burning it, and putting the carbon back in the atmosphere, some years after it was breathed in by a dinosaur or photosynthesised into some ancient plant.
Re: Should we be more worried about plastic than global warming?
As stated in the article, burning of rubbish is something that has gone on for eons, it is the inclusion of modern materials derived from hydrocarbons that causes additional pollution where that burning is in open air as occurs in 'low-income' regions.
Developed nations either bury their waste in landfill or burn it in controlled emission incinerators.
Our regional council removes certain plastics from 'recyclable' collections and ships it to countries that we hope will genuinely recycle it rather than themselves bury it, burn it, or discard it where it might end up in the oceans, but I have concerns that we (the Western nations) are fuelling the abuse by using recycling as a means to shift responsibility for proper disposal.
Talking to our local council authority (or their contractors), the 'value' of recyclable commodities varies greatly from time to time such that it becomes uneconomic or there is no market for them.
Garbage that is rejected by the public as not recyclable (including that deposited in street litter bins) is sent for incineration without sorting for recyclable materials.
I have visited our recycling facility and watched the sorting process (part manual and part automatic) which is quite intricate.
I have seen (in London) where bins (in parks) designated for recyclable items were emptied into the same collection as non-recyclable materials.

Do they transport it overseas to be sorted by people who are paid less than one dollar a day?
Re: Should we be more worried about plastic than global warming?
Our curbside recycling doesn't allow plastics like grocery bags an plastic packaging.
The grocery stores mostly have bins for returning plastic grocery bags. I include plastics like bread bags and other plastics like those used for cheese and tortillas.
To me, all plastics should be returned and let the recyclers sort it out.

Re: Should we be more worried about plastic than global warming?
LEGO has seen an increase in sales during the lockdown as families resort to group activities.
The company has become aware that their product is 100% plastic and is researching for alternative material.
I wonder how many tons of LEGO exists Worldwide?

One interesting observation is that while everyone is concentrating on making us all drive eleccy cars, the oil companies are switching to plastics manufacture which involves burning fossil fuels.........
