Just looked at the World Covid virus stat projections, projections I don't usually look at. While UK has undoubtedly the highest number of deaths, and that cannot get better, case projections tell a different story.

UK essentially flat lines near the bottom come July, the same is not true of France or Germany. I can see why they are worried.

The difference between the death toll in the UK and Germany may be at least partially down to the way the numbers are collected. The UK counts anyone who dies within 28 days of a positive test, until the summer it was anybody who had had a positive test at any time, Germany only counts confirmed cases.

The link shows the latest statistics for Germany, including around 74,000 fatalities.

Interestingly enough our German friends who went back to live in their home near Lake Konstanze last year have had several deaths from CV among their acquaintances. Here in Spain we know of none. A couple of people our carer looks after have died, but of cancer or old age.

OFSO, one might suspect that cancer was a potential cause of death earlier on so that when they died it was a question of closing that case rather than looking to see if Covid either causes the death or attributed to the death.

I would put my money on the former.

The cancer death followed a fall breaking bones weakened by cancer, a person who'd neglected his health over quite a long life. Weeks horizontal in hospital bed, only visitor his career who is our cleaner.

Back to Germany. Incredibly old-fashioned, everything done by pen and paper ("Zettelwirtschaft") including recording mass test results which then sent by fax (remember faxes?) and written by hand in tables. (Source: today's FT). Germans giving their names as Micky Mouse or Donald Trump or writing so illegibally they can't be traced.

We renewed our German passports last week, the German Embassy in London only accepts payment by postal order!

If it's an older man at the counter, speeds thing up if you hum the Horst Wessel Lied under your breath.

We renewed them through the Honourary Consul for Plymouth working from her kitchen in a village in the countryside, we imagined it would be a crusty old Beamterin but in fact it was a very nice and helpful young lady about 30.
She had come to the UK as a student and liked it so much she stayed.

Now that long ago. Say 30 years, we were being talked to by a German. His head would have fitted in one of those old medieval helmets. Eventually he got around to to the war. We Brits were on the wrong side. Together we would have ruled the world.

We met the British Consul inThessalonika. I don't think he was British but a big man, very calm and methodical. Pinstripe trousers, white shirt and tie, waistcoat and morning coat. Had he worn spats I would not have been surprised.

Seemingly it was the German Catholic Bishops who twisted Merkel's arm. Can't have churches empty over Easter can we!

It also guarantees extra business at funerals. Bit like companies making fortunes out of vaccine prices really.

The Merkel creature is looking very unwell on TV this morning, blown in every direction as she is by rivals, advisors, vaccine manufacturing companies and Brussels. And it all started off so well. Time for a new leader. I was going to say "and a march into Austria" but things are even worse there.

Germany has been in touch with Russia with a request to buy the Sputnik vaccine. EU Commission not pleased but Germany, like France, is untouchable.

Aren't the EU investigating the Sputnik vaccine because people have died from it? Or isn't it that important because the British aren't involved.
