Re: Chaos in Spain
Big demonstrations against the Socialist government have been called for Madrid tomorrow by the three right-wing parties. The Prime Minister, Sanchez, is proposing pardons for the Catalan politicians who were sentenced to long custodial periods for sedition and rebellion. He has to do this in order to survive as PM. There is also outrage in right-wing Spain because Sanchez has plans to allow teaching about the Civil War, 1937-39, to be allowed in Spanish schools.

Re: Chaos in Spain
Precious little in English schools either about Spain after the Peninsula Wars with much of that CS Forester. Something about the International Brigade but little else.
I had wondered how the Luftwaffe had managed to get their aircraft there and through a Compuserve forum a lt col in the Spanish Air Force said they had been crated and shipped in.
A lot of blind eyes by European countries.

Re: Chaos in Spain
Do the Spanish ever speak of that War nowadays?
When I worked there, in the 1980s, they would not speak of it at all. It was still too raw.
I remember one elderly woman, dressed in black mourning garb, yelling to another similarly aged and dressed woman across the street of an otherwise quiet Andalucian village "Coño!".
It was explained to me by my secretary quietly and very simply: "The War".
There's nothing civilised about a civil war.

I was thrown out of Compuserve's aviation forum, about a week after paying my annual dues, for declaring that the UKUSA Iraqi WMD hoax was a hoax.

No, Civil War not mentioned, monuments desecrated, 25,000 missing, if families try to find out what happened to their relatives they are persecuted. Suddenly find medical insurance cancelled, tax assessments, driving licences withdrawn, etc etc. They have learned it's better to keep schtum.

Reported on AlJazeera:

The Socialist leader made the widely expected announcement during a speech in Catalonia’s capital, Barcelona, on Monday morning.

Re: Chaos in Spain
#451 - Government has also announced the working day will in future be divided into low price (per kW), medium price, and high price segments, with the cheapest segments at the time nobody needs to use power, and the most expensive just when you have the oven on, heating, pool pump, ect. The only people to benefit are those with electric cars on charge, and they are so expensive that the owners don't give a fig about electrity prices anyway.
Re: Chaos in Spain
We have that in California too, pricing varies by time of day. They were going to switch everyone to the latest tariff, I looked at it and noted that it would cost me 50% more than my current tariff and opted out. I can stay on the current one until some date next year, so I'll happily do that.

My fixed-price tarif is titled "The Tarif of Tranquility" which in essence means you sh*t yourself when you get a bill.

Re: Chaos in Spain
Predictably the Spanish PM's pardonning of nine ( it was 15, then 12, now 9) Catalan MPs guilty of sedition and rebellion has been condemned by the far right (who consider the MPs should stay in prison for ever), the center (who like over 60% of all Spanish think they should serve their sentences) and the Catalans (who think the pardons, which are conditional and provisional, do nothing to further Catalan separatism).

It's very obvious from watching politicians and scientific advisors here, that regarding the efficiency of stopping Covid transmission by wearing masks in the open air they now espouse the views of (much missed) Barking Mad. And, of course, the World Health Organisation.

Re: Chaos in Spain
EU recommending no travel to Spain. An acquaintance from the UK is coming down here next week. Asked around in London, was told no infections in Spain.
