Chaos in Spain

#1 Post by OFSO » Fri Oct 26, 2018 3:44 pm

The Catalan politicians have been in prison since October 2017, no charges brought against them.

Sanchez, the new socialist Prime Minister of Spain, has so little support in the Cortez that he can only rule with the support of the remaining, not-in-prison Catalan politicians.

Who gave him until the end of this month to release their colleagues from jail, or they would withdraw their support, leading to a general election.

It was announced last night that formal charges would be brought in the next five days (i.e. before the deadline expires) against the lot in prison, that they would be tried in February for 'rebellion', found guilty and hung by the neck, etc. Well, maybe not the decision, but it's inevitable.

Rebellion is punishable by up to 30 years custodial sentence plus a very substantial fine.

The European Court of Human Rights has just ruled that the trial of a Spanish politician in 2012 was a travesty of justice in every respect and that after six and a half years in prison he should be released as he's not guilty. Today's newspaper writes "Who will give him the six and a half years back that has been taken from him ? Another blow for Spanish justice". More to the point is whether the Spanish courts will take any notice of the ECHR decision....

One dead forty four injured in train crash north west of Barcelona after landslide onto track. Rain now stopped but many roads still closed. Just hung the washing out as day started clear; now threatening again.

The third derailment at that point in ten years, all caused by falling boulders. Two days ago a driver slowed and took a video of the water pouring down both vertical sides of the cutting. Reported, no action taken.

That was sensible. RENFE seem to have a bit of a monopoly on brain dead drivers doing stupid things, I'm thinking of course of the speeding AVE a couple of years ago in Galicia.

Can't see the Spanish giving up their two colonies in Africa.

Apparently they are not colonies, they are protectorates and the Spanish there to protect them.

Fingers pointing and accusations about the cause of the railway cutting collapse that killed one and injured 49. Third one in nine years at that location. Only thing everyone has agreed on is that of the track maintenance funds promised by Madrid, only 13% was ever paid.

Truck drivers blockading Barcelona today, 7 am to 3 pm. Protesting against something the town hall has done. Nothing moving. But I'm heading north into France tonight, where the French truck drivers blah blah blah..

Rioting in Barcelona yesterday. On one side armed police guarding the parliament building. On the other, university professors and students, doctors, dentists, surgeons and firemen etc. Protesting against the breakdown of society. (Surely some mistake ?)

Big demos planned for Barcelona today. Not a good time to have a medical emergency with so many doctors marching on the streets with university professors and students. No doubt the chaoten will be breaking shop windows and setting cars on fire. Only another week here and then back to 'normal' London for a month.

Anti-invader sentiments in Spain are a focus of regional elections tomorrow in Andalucia.
The populist tide that has brought the far-Right into mainstream politics across Europe has so far largely failed to materialise in Spain.

But that could be about to change on Sunday as the anti-immigration and Eurosceptic Vox party hopes to make its first gains as it takes advantage of the rising number of asylum seekers crossing from North Africa.

If Vox picks up the two seats predicted in Andalucia's regional elections, it would mark the first parliamentary representation on any level in Spain since democracy replaced General Franco.

Among the ultra-conservative Catholic party's radical policies are a wall to keep immigrants out of the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla that border Morocco, the suspension of Catalonia’s regional government and an end to abortions at public hospitals.

Francisco Serrano, Vox’s leading candidate in Andalucia, and a judge by profession, is “convinced” that Vox will make the breakthrough and enter Andalucia’s parliament after polling consistently at around five per cent during the campaign, a major leap forward compared to a result of just 0.2 per cent in Spain’s 2016 general election.

“We are not an extreme right party; we are extremely necessary,” he told The Telegraph.

“We are the only party defending Spain in a clear way, without any complexes. There is no support for the far-Right in Spain; if we’re connecting with people, we cannot be extremists.”

The rise of Vox adds even more uncertainty to Spain’s fragmented political scene. The young socialist government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is under pressure to call a snap election before spring if it can't find backers for the budget.

Nervous observers in Mr Sanchez's government and analysts elsewhere are viewing Andalucia's vote as a dry run for a national election - and a first test for the current government since it topples the corruption-mired centre-Right Popular Party earlier this year in a surprise no confidence poll.

Since then Spain has seen a surge in illegal migration, partly thanks to Italy's hardline deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini closing ports to charity rescue ships.

The migrant route from Libya to Italy has also been largely shut off by a controversial deal between the EU and the Libyan coastguard.

Andalucia has born the brunt of the more than 45,000 migrants who have arrived illegally in Spain by sea this year – three times more than during the whole of 2017 – immigration became a hot-button issue in the campaign.

Vox wants to expel migrants who have entered the country illegally. Mr Serrano said Spain could not afford to take in foreigners unless they had work contracts before arriving.

“We don’t discriminate against any races, but above all we are proud to say that we love our own people. And for those who don’t respect our traditions, we are going to keep the exit doors open.”

The leader of Spain’s mainstream conservative Popular Party (PP), Pablo Casado, has ramped up his anti-immigration rhetoric. “If they are coming here to commit crimes, they chose the wrong country,” Casado said in Andalucia last week, adding. “We don’t do ablation of the clitoris here, or slaughter a ram in the home.”

Polls suggest the PP is set to drop from the 27 per cent it won in Andalucia in 2015 to 21 per cent, caught in a pincer between Vox to the right and the liberal Ciudadanos towards the centre, the latter predicted to double its share to 18 per cent.

On the Left, the Socialists are seemingly certain of winning in a region that the party has governed since the first regional elections were held in 1982, but sitting Andalucian President Susana Díaz will need to strike a deal with Left-wing Podemos if she is to have any chance of continuing to govern.

There was a gunfight in Barcelona this morning. Three wounded plus one critical. Oddly enough someone started filming from a window before the first shot was fired....Gunfights are unusual, the gangs usually favour machetes.

Rioting in Girona today as the fascist Vox party held an anti-Catalan rally and the university students opposed it. Many injured.

Seems to me that a constant influx of migrants is causing chaos everywhere...who thought this was a great idea in the first place?

Angela Merkel and I've just watched her speech (platitudes, platitudes) as she gives up chairmanship of her Party today. She remains as Bundes Chancellor.

She therefore remains in the position where she can inflict maximum damage on Germany and by extension, to the rest of Europe.

It is too late, the damage has been done. I believe that history may, in the fullness of time, judge the demented and evil of Adolf Hitler less harshly than the Merkel woman.

That may seem a bit strong and may offend people, but it's just my opinion, as invaders continue to flood in.
