Oddly enough entering the UK via Ireland is a fairly common practice among offshore workers who are allowed only a limited stay in the UK by HMRC without recurring liability for IT. Fly into Eire, train across the border, ferry to the mainland. No record of entry so stay as long as you like.

3rd option - invade Eire and take it back into British control.

On another forum, I suggested that they be given the option of rejoining the UK, I was shouted down.

Since the creation of Eire, the Irish have had the right of free movement into the UK, the right of residence, the right to vote when they get to the UK and the rights to all benefits.

Why do they want independence from the UK?

Same reason as the Scots of course. So they can stay in the EU.

The Irish hated Westminster rule (for the same reason that all the other colonial possessions did), because it was there only to give legal formalisation to their exploitation.
