Our cleaner's daughter, a very competent and organised teenager, lives in Bordeaux where she is a much-in-demand au pair, running several families lives. Mate when there's a chance to do some serious trashing of public property I can't see the local radical islamics just staying at home and watching it on the telly.

Problems for our Channel Island friends who have been staying with us and return home to France today. The Barcelona taxi drivers who are protesting against Uber have joined forces with the French yellow vests who are protesting against Macron, to jointly close the border at La Jonquera to all vehicular traffic. Oh what fun it is to live in civilised democracies.

Barcelona taxi drivers decided to stay there and burn a few Uber cars instead of driving up to the border and joining the froggies fighting East European truck drivers on the AP7 motorway, so our friends had an untroubled drive home. I am so glad the EU grants us the right to unhindered border crossing between Member States, what would life be like without it !

You couldn't make it up department: Macron's government introduces a new law from Feb 1st. In order to protect small businesses, all shops and supermarkets are forbidden from selling foodstuffs at no or small profit margins. From next month the profit margin must be 10% or more. So immediate rise in price of coffee, cheese, bread, milk.....at your local cut-price supermarket.

As always, you get what you vote for, if you still have a democracy, that is.

I am sitting here watching France 24 TV. Parisian protestors carrying banners reading FREXIT NOW and protesting about the use of rubber bullets by the riot police. (300 demonstrators seriously hurt and 19 have lost an eye as a result of the police not understanding the instructions NOT to fire rubber bullets directly at the face.) Meanwhile the price of common foodstuffs, not to mention drinkstuffs, rose by 10% today by Macron's decree to protect small shop-owners. Not sure he's got the hang of being President....although he has found a way of uniting France.

Macron's idea is that large supermarkets can afford to sell products at cost to get the punters in. Small shops can't. So now all shops have to sell many products at a minimum of 10% markup, making big and small shops equal. Brilliant, eh ? Only......the giant hypermarket chain Auchan immediately announced new 5% to 10%
loyalty card discounts on most products, a scheme which small shops can't afford to implement. Two other chains of hypermarkets, Geant and Carrefour, have similar systems coming out. So shot yourself in the foot again, eh, Macron ?

Macron was a banker (is that really spelt with a 'b'?) before falling into politics. You'd think he might have a greater degree of financial sense, but then being a Frog and having much sense about anything are more or less mutually exclusive.

My phone just beeped, Demosphere alerted me to Big Strike and Manifestation Day in France today. So nothing new there, then.

It's no longer news, the French have been revolting since the beginning of time. The mistake that was made in recent times was to give them clothes and the trappings of modern civilisation.

You can put them into modern offices and shiny cars, give them computers and I-pads, but they are still unwashed peasants.
