Kim Jong Un is on his train.

#1 Post by John Hill » Mon Feb 25, 2019 2:26 am

Kim Jong Un is supposed to be on a train that left Pyongyang and passed into China presumably on his way to Vietnam..

Unlikely to be delayed due to the wrong sort of snow. leaves on the line, shortage of train crew, signal failures between New Street and Wolverhampton, points failures at Paddington and overcrowding......plus, the benefits of a state run railway ! ( caution, these comments are known as irreverent humour )

A quick surreptitious stop "somewhere in China" to receive his orders.

The North Koreans don't take orders from furriners. That's the problem. That what the Korean War was all about.

They had their fill of furriners when the Japanese Empire was in charge, and when the Chinese Empire was in charge before then. They don't want to be subjugated by the Murricane Empire either.

The Vietnamese understand. They've had to deal with: The Empire; the ffrench; the British Empire; the Japanese Empire; the Chinese Empire. Unlike the Koreans, they beat the Murricanes and drove them off the peninsula. The Koreans have been paying for that failure ever since.

One assumes from what has been made public, that N. Korea, China & Vietnam all use the same rail gauge.

But surely this 4,000km each way run won't be attempted by just one loco?

Vietnam does not have the same rail gauge and it is reported Kim will travel by road from the Vietnamese border.

I guess the reason why the Vietnamese chose to have a different gauge from their neighbour is similar to the reason why the Spanish railway was also a different gauge from their Northern neighbour.

I remember the palaver at Irun/Hendaye. The carriages were lifted up by a bridge crane and local bogeys inserted. All done with pax still aboard.

The Spanish now have trains that can change gauge on the move albeit it 12kmh. North and South Korea have the same gauge as China but I dont know what gauge is used on the line that crosses from Russia into North Korea.

Why is the FLUF taking a choo-choo and not Air Koryo? Is flying now considered by the Chinese govt as being too bourgeois for lesser commie politicians?

Kim Jong Un is taking his train because he can and Trump cannot.

Erm, maybe he's not quite as daft as he looks.....would you fly on said airline given alternative transport was available. Anyway, shows he's an environmentalist deep at heart dunnit !! ....not contributing to global warming chucking out them effluxes .....well ok, he's probably deposited his chips curry and rice across the tracks, but, this is all recycling at it 's finest !

He takes the train 'cos his granpappy did so.

It's a nostalgia thing. Kinda like Herr Drumpff running a whorehouse in memory of his granpappy.

Surreptitious! Yes, his bettter half, like mine, knows that Chinese food is fattening and full of monosodium glutamate, so he too has to sneak to the Chinese for a quick order!

"One hot and sour soup, 4 spring rolls, 2 dim sum, 1 chicken fried rice, and a diet Coke. Make it snappy please please, my train is waiting"...

You see he too goes for the "healthy" option Coke to assuage his lipid filled conscience!

=))

Of course if he’d flown he could’ve pre-ordered a vegan meal :D
When all else fails, read the instructions.

Possibly, but I couldn't see inside.
There's been C-17s around this week too, no doubt doing a similar job. From Hickam, HI.

Every time the president travels, especially outside the US, there are many aircraft involved in addition to AF1. Tankers refuel and cargo (C-5 and C-17) carry the limos and support staff that don't get on AF1.

It's a big deal for TACC which manages AF support for presidential movement. These mission are called SAMs, and they must happen perfectly or there will be consequences.

I've reflected on Hanoi being the site of this meeting. We've come a long way since the 1970's.
