Sudden death... most satisfying. Ice pick in the eye kind of thing. Excellent.Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Fri Nov 13, 2020 6:52 pmWorking notice at that level is a nonsense. Indeed in the RAF we experienced the poisioness atmosphere from those who PVRd and had to serve 18 months notice.
Cardboard box and blocking access immediately is essential.
"No More Heroes"
Whatever happened to Leon Trotsky?
He got an ice pick
That made his ears burn
Whatever happened to dear old Lenny?
The great Elmyra,
And Sancho Panza?
Whatever happened to the heroes?
Whatever happened to the heroes?
Whatever happened to all the heroes?
All the Shakespearoes?
They watched their Rome burn
Whatever happened to the heroes?
Whatever happened to the heroes?
No more heroes any more
No more heroes any more
Whatever happened to all the heroes?
All the Shakespearoes?
They watched their Rome burn
Whatever happened to the heroes?
Whatever happened to the heroes?
No more heroes any more

When I retired I had time to run a Government wipe program on my office PC, it wasn't networked. The last command is issued was:

Easily unformatted by the way... needs to be wiped using at least DoD 5220.22-M Wiping Standard ...Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Fri Nov 13, 2020 7:07 pmWhen I retired I had time to run a Government wipe program on my office PC, it wasn't networked. The last command is issued was:

TGG, exactly, that was the first process,,
More recently I disposed of an HDD. After wiping it I sent it to my brother in law's son in law. He is a forensic analyst. He had recovered data from physically destroyed equipments from various nefarious enterprises; my disc was clean.
The program is Israeli.

Ok, ok just wanted to make sure your OPSEC standards were good...
You old buzzards need to be aware of NIST 800-88 Clear and NIST 800-88 Purge for solid state drives as well...

Rumours that Scummings had BoJo's brain in the box, but I reckon the box was too big - more likely BoJo's ego.

TGG, my friend could work with the chip that had been broken out of a micro SD cars. People don't realise just how resilient they are.
My last RAF job involved an ancient computer system. The HDD component weighted about 25lb. The platters were about 5 inch diameter. A head crash made them look like a worn disc brake. For destruction the platters were taken to Rolls Royce who would 'polish' the discs. That was industrial wiping

Indeed. I am old enough to remember the IBM 3370's. The HDD's comprised of seven fixed 14-inch disks, and each unit had a capacity of 571 MB and the whole unit weighed over 300 pounds. My laptop has 32 GB SSD and the whole unit weighs 5.2 pounds...Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Fri Nov 13, 2020 7:28 pmTGG, my friend could work with the chip that had been broken out of a micro SD cars. IBM 1311 Disk Drives on an IBM 1401 The IBM CPU is behind the man. Each removable disk pack could hold 2 million characters, bytes weren't in use yet!TheGreenGoblin wrote: ↑Fri Nov 13, 2020 7:36 pmIndeed. I am old enough to remember the IBM 3370's. The IBM 2311 on the S/360 looked similar and used the same disk packs at twice the density.
In the background IBM 7330 Tape Drives and the IBM 1402 Card Reader/Punch.

Great shot Ian. You are clearly an ex IBM Mainframe man. The data centres I worked in looked much the same albeit with midrange IBM kit. Only thing missing was the good looking lady with the cross your heart bra and the rather ardent look of admiration...

It’s Gwyneth Paltrow's head in the box

Re: Chaos in the UK
Ian, our backup disc packs were like the one he was holding only a little larger. Each disc pack was sealed. I can't remember the fine detail even though I would do a daily backup. I remember opening the drive lid, offering up the disc pack, removing the plastic cover, shutting the drive lid and then doing its stuff. Top and bottom platters were sacrificial and held no data.
