Aukus: US and UK face global backlash over Australia defence deal
The US and UK are facing growing international criticism over a new security pact signed with Australia.
The deal - seen as an effort to counter China - will see the US and UK give Australia the technology to build nuclear-powered submarines.
But the move angered France, which said it had been "stabbed in the back", while China accused the three powers of having a "Cold War mentality".
And the pact has raised fears that it could provoke China into a war.
The alliance, known as Aukus, was announced by US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison on Wednesday.
While they did not mention China, Aukus is being widely viewed as an effort to counter Beijing's influence in the contested South China Sea.
Gosh! The 'global' backlash seems to have come from France who have rightly lost the deal after the cost ballooned from the reportedly agreed $50 million to $90 million. The little emperor is said to be furious, especially perhaps after kissing the arses of two US presidents.
Amazingly in a change from their usual quite and reflective comments the Chinese are also said to be very cross and have condemned the allies as 'having a Cold War mentality'.The Chinese state-run Global Times warned of an arms race for nuclear submarines, adding that Australian soldiers were likely to be the "first to die" in a Chinese "counterattack". Countering what? Thank goodness they weren't belligerent with their remarks.
I expect Iran and North Korea will also have their own opinions about the deal but don't appear to have voiced them. I wonder what Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Japan think about it.
Good old BBC - straight to the heart of the biased reporting.

Re: The disgraceful BBC
And what do the natives think? Was the sudden change in policy to nuclear submarines, dependent on US or UK provision of fuel, agreed by the electorate?
China Merchants Port Holdings Co. Ltd. is a 50% shareholder in the Port of Newcastle, on Australia's eastern coast and a key hub for exporting coal. China Investment Corp. is part of a consortium that bought the Port of Melbourne in 2016. Some federal lawmakers want those investments also to be reversed.26 May 21
Re: The disgraceful BBC
I think that scrapping the submarine order with France has been under discussion for quite a while as it was obviously a crap deal from early on. In St Ives it seems the deal was discussed by Joe, Bunter and ScoMo. The US wants friends in the area to bolster their arguments with the Chinese and Australia is a natural ally as they have been under the Chinese cosh for some time. I don't think the electorate come into saying yes or no on defence matters but they are generally well disposed towards the States. There is no anti-nuclear powered vessel visit agreement for port visits in Oz. The port being discussed for building the vessels is not Newcastle or Melbourne, I think it's Adelaide and I don't think they will let the Chinese interfere in the matter. If it ever came to problems with the build they could get General Dynamics Electric Boat/Newport News Shipbuilding/Huntington Ingalls or any other yard that specialises in these boats to construct them. If cost is a problem they could buy a tried and trusted SSN design from the States without re-inventing the wheel.
Re: The disgraceful BBC
Well the Frog president is throwing a hissy fit, recalling their ambassador and the Chinese government is also rattling their sabres, their MSM is making veiled threats according to the news here. All in all getting out of the Frog deal is a good thing owing to the escalating cost and delay.
Re: The disgraceful BBC
Slightly off topic of insulting the BBC. French pique rises. The Little Emperor will have to concentrate on kissing Putin's backside now.

Re: The disgraceful BBC
Tonight's BBC news headlines opinion of someone who's father died of Covid, that an earlier lockdown would have saved his life. Whilst that MAY be the case it is hardly fact and the BBC, once again, use such bias to criticise the current government in an underhand, subversive way, whilst claiming to be fair and impartial.

Re: The disgraceful BBC
I listened to a R4 interview this morning, the interviewer rightly asked if the failure to immediately lock down on medical advice resulted in deaths, the interviewee came across badly because he failed to point out that the imposition of an immediate lockdown without proper planning would have resulted in deaths by freezing and starvation.
The BBC will have a high day with these reports simply because the reports are only from a medical source and don't reflect the actual circumstances and events that the Government had to factor in at the time. I am surprised that the BBC haven't calculated how many black transvestites might have been saved if Johnson had done things differently.
The Director of the BBC has just had a 40% pay rise.

ITV news did the same. Perhaps its true? It's a thought.Tonight's BBC news headlines opinion of someone who's father died of Covid, that an earlier lockdown would have saved his life. om15 wouldn't recognise the truth if it slapped him in the face, and even if it did, he wouldn't admit to it! He is completely cognitively aberrant, and willing to bend any fact to suit his own dubious agenda, and thus he is a totally unreliable commentator!Boac wrote: ↑Tue Oct 12, 2021 5:55 pmITV news did the same. Maybe you missed my point. What was stated is pure supposition and cannot be proven either way but the BBC airs it as 'fact'.Boac wrote: ↑Tue Oct 12, 2021 5:55 pmITV news did the same. No, I got your 'point' but 'pointed' out that the BBC is not alone in that, and PERHAPS it is true?.

Re: The disgraceful BBC
The normally very mild and very placid Mrs 4ma got thoroughly riled at yet more wokeness and political correctness being shoved in our faces by this publicly-funded monstrosity. It is usually she who tells me that I'm get worked up over nothing when I rant about the bloody Beeb, but today was unusual as it was her that was doing the ranting. It was one of those occasions when "Yes dear" was definitely the appropriate response.

Re: The disgraceful BBC
Same here, though it was not a one off rant. Mind you, she was unimpressed by the alternative offering at ITV.
I just tune out the noise from the idiot box.

Re: The disgraceful BBC
What we need is a decent alternative TV news source - perhaps someone could start one - maybe call it 'GB News'?

Better Ops-N with international news. When did we last hear of things from our European members' countries or even other international ones?

Re: The disgraceful BBC
MP Sir David Amess gets stabbed so the fearful trembling BBC cancels "Have I Got News For You" in case it gives offence, and puts an incredibly old but harmless video of "Would I Lie To You" on instead.
