But you never paused for a moment to consider how your country had contributed to the darkness of the north.
The circumstances North Koreans find themselves in are of their own making. They've allowed their country to become a personality cult built around the Kim dynasty and enforced by a police state. The US has not promoted that unhappy state, nor did it create it. Socialism did.

We were talking about darkness, darkness which is due to no electricity, no electricity due to no oil for thermal power stations, no oil due to sanctions sponsored by the USA. Neither do they have nuclear power stations again due to actions of the USA.

Perhaps an organisation (such as NATO) could examine the NK Power industry to confirm the cause of the inadequacy as to why the lights aren't on?
If the reason is purely economic, maybe reducing the spend on the military (although that raises the problem of what to do with the 'not wanted' personnel . . .

Why would a country which is the target of long term American aggression want to reduce their military?

Vietnam had some issues with the US but I think they are on the way to improve them if they had not done so.

Frankly I fail to see why NK is so important for the USA to maintain sanctions.

North Korea is the last remnant of the very lucrative Cold War and calling it quits is just too hard for some people.

Last time I checked, the budget for purchases for the US DoD is much healthier than mine. In other words they need an enemy there just for the sake of it.

Kim Jong Un needs an enemy too and the US is happy to oblige and one could be forgiven for thinking the US really wants to retain the status quo.

The actions of the US over the last 30+ years indicates they WANT an enemy in North Korea.

So if North Korea has such a paucity of energy, why was it sending trainloads of coal to China every day, until US-imposed sanctions cut deeply into that trade? It was a key lynchpin of its pathetic economy. You'd think having all that previously exported coal on hand to fire up power plants would enable them to light up the place. And the workers could enjoy universal health care, a living wage, and LGBTQ rights.

Ive only been once to Pyongyang (737 charter) yonks ago for 4 days. I've explained this in John's prev thread on the place.

Only thing I'll add is that the locals blame the US for everything that goes wrong. If a factory has a sudden power blackout it's the US's fault. If the pub I stayed out has run out of eggs it's the US's fault. If a bloke slips on his arse on an icy sidewalk it's the US's fault. Everything good that happens of course is solely due to the magnanimous graces of the FLUF. The minders (official 'guide' and the spies next door) were friendly enough though.

Never had to go through it's airspace since.

I have never tried shoveling coal into oil fired power stations but I cant imagine it would go well.

I spent the last four years under a political left government. I finally understand those two quotes regarding leftist/communist regimes:

Socialism is spending other's people money / The left cares to spread misery equitably
The church and the left need poverty and misery to attract followers.

I am sure sanctions are pretty much irrelevant and NK's people suffering is a deliberate action of its leader.

As I've said before: the purpose of diplomacy is to prolong a crisis. That includes sanctions.

Also true: keep your friends close, but keep your enemies even closer. In that regard I can't fault Trump's actions in Singapore.

How about trying something new such as putting aside all this ineffective Rambo crap and start some significant positive interaction?
.....so at least this is a step in the right direction.
