Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
Ian I just flashed my ID Card one time. Not a blink.
At the time we used NATO Travel Orders and I never had to show anything except the ID Card.
Funny thing though, in the V-Force we had a Travel Order valid TFN, years later we were given one per trip.
We were also issued a F Ident.179 (I think that was the number). A bit longer and a bit narrower than a credit card. Had you service number and details twice. The bottom half was detachable the size of an old railway ticket.
In the event of capture the tear off bit was to be given to the protecting power. All very WW2.

F Ident 179 translates as "the bearer of this piece of paper is who he says he is".

In 1957-8 when I travelled between Istres/Orange and UK I used my F1250.Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 8:58 pmIan I just flashed my ID Card one time. Not a blink.
It was also good enough to travel to & from Malta.
The RAF got me my 1st passport as it was needed to get to Karachi and because we stopped in Khartoum to re-fuel the Hastings. We also were not in 'uniform' for the leg through Khartoum, and our passports described us as Government Officials.

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
I've entered the UK just using my seaman's card.
The Immigration guy didn't even open it up. Just my appearance and the outside cover was enough. It's exactly like the old blue-hardback passport, except it's red. It's almost exactly the same as a Diplomatic Passport of yore, 'cept it bears the words Seaman instead of Diplomat.

When we deployed to the Far East Khartoum was our en route diversion. We were not to land there with bombs on board. Quite where we would hide them we were not told.ian16th wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 4:26 pmIn 1957-8 when I travelled between Istres/Orange and UK I used my F1250.Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 8:58 pmIan I just flashed my ID Card one time. UP stirred my interest, i remembered that i had stamps in my seamans card so i wondered if i had ever used it instead of a passport. Located it and the stamps were to advise my tax code! My tax code was five in 1969, the last entry.

Campaigners are calling for Punch and Judy shows to be scrapped due to racist undertones and scenes of domestic violence.
The slapstick puppet show traditionally sees the character of Mr Punch act in an unruly way to his wife Judy, as well as their baby and various other characters, including a policeman.
It has been reported that schools are banning the puppets due to the fear that it 'glorifies' domestic violence, and that the time is right for Mr Punch to become more 'politically correct'.

That argument was rife 45 years ago - and I agreed with it then.Capetonian wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 9:00 pmCampaigners are calling for Punch and Judy shows to be scrapped due to racist undertones and scenes of domestic violence.

Thanks for confirming my memory. I think mine is kicking around somewhere.
I still have a Goolie chit, massive piece of stiff paper bigger than A2 size. Would have been almost impossible to fold and stick in a pocket.

Once got into the USA without my passport. Operating crew, and for some reason my briefcase had been subject to a periodic "sorting out" and the passport not returned to its permanent home. Arriving in Honolulu the Hofficer just ticked my name on the crew list after seeing my company photo I.D. Pre 911 of course.

In the 1970s they should have gone in your (blue) Discharge Book, not your red Seamans Card.
I proudly have an elaborate Saudi stamp in the one page of my Seamans Book which is intended for special endorsements. I says, in Arabic, the equivalent of : "Persona Non Grata"

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
Just looked and the same income tax stamp is in both books, seamans and discharge. Couldn't think of a better place to be declared non grata in Plum...

You would think Bojo was getting tired of being jerked around on the puppet strings, wouldn't you?LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said that he was responsible for Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to ban Huawei from Britain’s 5G network from the end of 2027.
