Al Murray is brilliant and well-schooled in handling crowd 'assault' as a stand-up, having 'grown up' the hard way in the clubs. It is, however, true that his real attraction lies mainly with the lesser intellects in our country that think excessive bad language is 'funny'.

My personal example of this "worth" conundrum is our landscape helper. No great educational background but an almost supernatural feeling for soil and plants. If we build a rectangular concrete block retaining wall I direct the work because, for some reason, he lacks the understanding of the structural work but give him a big pile of assorted rocks and he can build a beautiful dry stone wall without wasting a rock. In that case his natural feel outshines my book learning and over time we have come to an amiable working relationship.

The management lesson you learn in life is that no one has the perfect collection of capabilities. Therefore, especially in the role of leader, the aim must be to place people where their particular capabilities can make the greatest contribution to the organization and also limit the effect of their greatest failings. The unfair image of an antisocial but brilliant computer nerd locked away in a basement to work would be a jocular example.

Good people do actually rise to the top of their specialities, the problem then is to avoid moving them that one Peter Principal step too far and we can all give examples of this mistake. Suddenly the hero becomes the villain.

To face reality, there are people we would rather not associate with at all. That's OK, they make no contribution to your life so why bother with them. Are we equal, in the eyes of the Universal - yes, in the reality of our life - no. Frankly, some people I would rather did not exist but at this time it is not my job to make that happen.
