Johnny Mercer has been abruptly dismissed as a junior defence minister after accusing Boris Johnson of breaching a commitment to implement a controversial pledge to prevent veterans who served in Northern Ireland from being prosecuted.

The junior minister was preparing to quit on Wednesday but his resignation was accepted by the chief whip early on Tuesday evening, eager to put a stop to speculation he was on the brink of departure.

Can we trust any commitment Boris Johnson makes?

Life with Boris: just been on BBC. Johnny Mercer, standing up for NI veterans, was ordered to resign. He refused, left the room. Five minutes later he gets a text, telling him he was fired from his post as Junior Defence Minister. Next morning Number Ten announces he's resigned.

I think I know who I would believe about what goes on in Number 10. Next thing I expect Number 10 will claim Mercer is 'voluntarily' giving up the Conservative whip then withdraw it themselves. Another 'parcel of rogues' I think.

Johnny Mercer, the sacked Defence Minister, has accused Boris Johnson of surrounding himself with “cowards” and “desperately weak” advisers who had “betrayed” veterans of the Northern Ireland conflict.

In an exclusive interview with The Telegraph, Mr Mercer launched an excoriating attack on Mr Johnson’s administration, claiming his experience during two years as Veterans’ Minister had been “horrific”.

He said he had been treated “like s*** throughout”.

He also described the Government as “the most distrustful, awful environment” in which he had worked and added: “Almost nobody tells the truth.”

Mr Mercer, 39, a former captain in the Army, had told Downing Street out of courtesy of his intention to resign over his frustration at the Government’s failure to offer legal protection to ex-soldiers facing prosecution over killings during the Troubles.

But instead, he says Number 10 leaked his planned resignation, and then sacked him by text message.

He said the prosecution of veterans, many in their 70s and 80s over events as long as 50 years ago, was a “huge scandal” and an “appalling betrayal” for a Government that had failed to stop it.

Did you ask him why he became a politician and junior minister in such a 'corrupt' government. Did that 'corruption' come as surprise to him? Being over the age of 18 he surely knew what was going on from day 10 in the government. "Gosh - politicians lie" - shock horror. Did he possibly have his sights set on personal ambition enough to persuade him to ignore it all?

I'm not sure 'Honesty and integrity' come high on that list.

Being at the moment personally affected by a corrupt organisation I know that reforms only come from inside: what would you have had Mercer do, stand outside and throw eggs at Parliament? One joins and tries to effect change.
