I watched the 'duty minister' on TV this AM - James Not-so, assuring us that during the recent Afghan crisis ministers were working tirelessly, night and day. Especially, I assume, when the beach in Crete was 'closed'?

It seems that there's a almighty bunfight going on in Whitehall. The pongos, understandably, want to import their loyal Afghan 'interpreters' and other collaborators of the failed Occupation. Home Office is not so keen to fetch more than 20 or 30 thousand, recognising that it could soon escalate into hundreds of thousands or a small number of millions of Afghans wanting to come in for a free lunch for life.

There's even a proposal to set up a rival mercenary outfit to compete with the Gurkhas and so drive down their Ts&Cs.

As soon as I saw that it brought to mind Arthur Griffiths, aka Boots as in he didn't have his feet on the brake pedals when he burst all his tyres. Didn't do his career any harm, retired as an AVM. He is on the left in this photo.

Great photo. Very 1960's. If it wasn't such a serious subject and part of the darker history of that time, I would be apt to say that it looks like a scene from The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Good to hear that AVM Griffiths', leaden landing, boots and all, didn't leave his career flat footed!

My helicopter handling has improved appreciably after I stopped wearing boots. I haven't quite gone fully G~Man, in flipflops, flashing my verrucas, just yet.

At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious- those Afghans who helped us are traitors- or at least collaboraters.

You know, like for example in WW2 when some Ffrench guys helped the occupying Germans.

Now, like the Germans- we've been defeated, but why do we owe these Afghans anything?

We tried to help them, and some of them tried to help us help them.

We failed- now help yourself.

I don't see why they should all get to come and live in the UK- along with their 8 children.

Another is these are foreign language capable which might be an asset to the Government. Others might be doctors or vets, or administrators. In other words useful and intelligent citizens much needed by the new Administration.

Post WW2 such people in occupied countries were essential to rebuilding the State. In the former enemy country, after denazification police and others resumed their previous roles.

The same might be true in Afghanistan, repent or whatever Muslims do, and carry on.

A double child killer is released from prison because the Parole Board has concluded it is safe to release him.

Colin Pitchfork released from prison.

He has a whole string of conditions attached to his release but a fat lot of good they will be if he decides to repeat the crimes he was sentenced for. No doubt it would become a "lessons must be learnt so it doesn't happen again" time for the liberal hand-wringers. Bastids like him should be left to rot in jail...and whilst I'm on about child killers, there's been mention that that evil bitch Beverly Allitt might be in line for release. If she ever walked in front of a car, I would hope the driver would mistake the accelerator for the brake pedal.

There are two reasons why we have a shortage of lorry drivers in the UK. Both of 'em **** obvious.

The first is that we've got far too may lorries on the roads. That's because we did away with the formerly extensive freight rail network. One train can haul a couple of hundred 40' containers. A 44 tonne truck can haul only one.

The other is that UK employers pay so little to their HGV drivers.

Double or treble the pay of British, specifically British, HGV drivers and you will double or treble the number of British drivers. There will be no need for Romanian or Polish or wotevvah drivers in the UK.
