WTF is happening in the UK?
Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
Here are some examples of 'free speech' from the 1930s:

I have introduced Hitler into the thread, criticised 'free' speech as well as turning into a 'snowflake'. Bad boy. Anyone who cannot see anything anti-semitic in that cartoon needs to go to Specsavers!
I agree about free speech but at some point there has to be a line drawn doesn't there?
Bojo is fat, a liar and was useless as PM but I thought it was quite a good cartoon.................... No, no, no, - vulgar humourless and oh so left wing!

Further to the cephalopod discussion which followed the post containing THAT Grauniad cartoon, I hope this reference will solve the mystery as to why that seafood item is linked to the misnamed ‘Sharp’, late of the Beeb;

What an appropriate name for this institution but it appears that the relatively recent gaffer of the BA pension fund is now attracting the same nickname as a result of it’s similar deadly stranglehold in the world of BigDosh;

.Ms Truss is still an MP and has spent some of her time giving speeches about her economic philosophy since she left office
Apparently people are prepared to spend money on listening to her, but she’s arguing about a bill of approximately £12000 from her campaign to screw lead the country.
When all else fails, read the instructions.

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
Post-Office speech money is just post-dated bribery.
I got the text of one of these speeches once. It's vacuous platitudes that the companies have to order their junior employees to go to to make up the numbers.
They had to go this route after sinecure non-executive directorships got clamped down on.
Labour still likes the humongous book advance, but since the books rarely even make the Top 100 list in Islington, that's suspicious now also.
Of course, the preferred method nowadays is stunningly successful children; the Blair sprogs, Chelsea Clinton, Hunter Biden....
Amazing how they all get top degrees, and get hired by vast numbers of companies for huge salaries.

About time we dusted off Mr Godwin!
More than happy to have a 'semitic' check on my next visit for an eye test, but (genuine question) now that BM has clarified the 'Squid' link to GS, can you tell me what you see as 'anti-semitic' in the cartoon, or, indeed, 'left wing'?FD2 wrote:Anyone who cannot see anything anti-semitic in that cartoon needs to go to Specsavers!

Jewish leaders want to meet Guardian editor over anti-Semitic Richard Sharp cartoon
The illustration pictures a grinning caricature of Mr Sharp, who is Jewish, with an enlarged nose and carrying a Goldman Sachs office box
Jewish leaders have demanded a meeting with The Guardian’s editor after it published a “vile” cartoon that sparked accusations of anti-Semitism.
On Saturday The Guardian carried a cartoon of Richard Sharp, drawn by Martin Rowson, that sparked shock and anger on social media, as well as allegations of anti-Semitism.
The illustration pictured a grinning caricature of Mr Sharp, who is Jewish, with an enlarged nose and carrying a Goldman Sachs office box, apparently stuffed with gold and a squid, as well as an apparent puppet of Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister. A pig’s head was featured behind him.
Mr Sharp previously worked at Goldman Sachs as a banker between 1985 and 2007.
Mr Sharp was forced to resign from his role as BBC chairman on Friday after he was found to have broken rules on public appointments. He had failed to disclose his involvement in trying to set up a meeting for a businessman offering to provide Boris Johnson, the former prime minister, with an £800,000 loan facility.
The Jewish “puppet master” secretly controlling the world order is a long-standing anti-Semitic trope used by conspiracy theorists.
‘Did not meet editorial standards’
The cartoon sparked outrage online from politicians, members of the Jewish community and social media users. Sajid Javid, a former cabinet minister who has served as health secretary, home secretary and chancellor, tweeted that it “wouldn’t have looked out of place in a Nazi newspaper”.
It has since been removed from The Guardian’s website and replaced with a statement reading: “The cartoon that was posted here today did not meet our editorial standards, and we have decided to remove it from our website.”
However, in the wake of its publication, Jewish leaders have demanded “an urgent meeting” with Katharine Viner, The Guardian’s editor.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews released a statement on Sunday saying: “We have written to The Guardian requesting an urgent meeting with Katharine Viner in regard to yesterday’s shocking cartoon in the paper, which contained anti-Semitic tropes.
“This is far from the first time that the paper has crossed the line in terms of highly questionable content connected to the Jewish community.”
The Campaign Against Antisemitism called on The Guardian editor to resign in the wake of the scandal surrounding the cartoon, claiming she has “given a veneer of genteel legitimacy to antisemitism and helped to fuel hatred against Jews”.
Gideon Falter, Chief Executive of the campaign group, said: “Whilst Jews observed the Sabbath and were unable to respond, The Guardian saw fit to publish a depiction of a Jew that would not have looked out of place on the pages of Der Stürmer.
“Though the cartoon has now been deleted, and the cartoonist has apologetically declared that the catalogue of anti-Jewish imagery — from bags of gold and a reference to banking, to a tentacled animal, to an outsized nose, and a pig apparently vomiting blood — were all a mistake, it was waved through by editors.
“This is surely a resignation offence for editor Katherine Viner whose newspaper has become known in the Jewish community for its platforming of antisemitism deniers, incitement during the Corbyn years, and occasional relapses into raw medieval anti-Jewish imagery of the kind published today. Under her editorship, The Guardian has given a veneer of genteel legitimacy to antisemitism and helped to fuel hatred against Jews.”
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/0 ... c-cartoon/
Now it seems to me that if this has caused such an outcry amongst the Jewish community then there might just be something anti-semitic about the portrayal of the (former) BBC boss in that cartoon. Of course some may think the Jews are being a bunch of bleating cry babies. Certainly the far left elements of the Labour Party, that were given free rein under Corbyn. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... leadership

'Anti-semitism' is a rabid woke cry of the snowflakes used now to cancel anything desired. Even Andrew Bridgen MP who has been a thorn in the flesh of the Tory party for a while was 'cancelled' with an incorrect labelling of a tweet as 'anti-semitic'.

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
The Guardian, and the Labour Party, have a long history of antisemitism.
Remember all that hoo-ha about the big increase in attacks on muslims in London a few years back?
Much was made of it by both The Guardian and Labour.
It was true, but both failed to mention that the biggest increase in attacks was on Jews, and the majority of those attacks on Jews that were solved were carried out by muslims.
It's the inevitable result of Labour doing anything to get the muslim vote.

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
Alas no, I didn’t clock that bird, my sojourn in that excellent ale house was also an in-depth discussion with my psycho therapist, who had become alarmed at first hand neighbours’ reports of my disturbing behaviour.
They were particularly concerned by the “monkeypox self treatment” incident which luckily did not involve my local hard-pressed plod.
But I remain active in my garden chasing away pigeons so’s I may observe rare birds.
And no, it wasn’t me chucking shotgun cartridges into the Buck Palace grounds!
Things hotting up in Londinium now!

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
Regarding the chucking of shotgun cartridges into the palace grounds, perhaps the perpetrator wanted the forthcoming event to go off with a bang.
Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
Apparently the Tory performance in the Local Elections is the result of PoohTin's invasion of Ukraine. I did wonder.............

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
For good performance they need a climb gradient, which for a twin is 2.4% and that for a four-engine is 3.0%.
I suspect their achieved results will have a minus sign in front of the percentage?
And possibly the decimal point will have shifted along with the CoG of current Blighty politics...

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
Along with the uplifting news that “School leavers will be able to start working as doctors without going to university, under NHS plans to solve the staffing crisis”(Daily Torygraph newspaper), we have the exciting prospect of lorries being over 2 metres longer;
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-65533993
The extra weight of these leviathans should help to tamp down the tarmac into the country’s many potholes.
What can possibly go wrong, just as the peasants asked when the proposal for M-Ways without hard shoulders was rolled out then executed?
Still, the “apprentice” doctors scheme might just work with suitable safeguards and is a much overdue slap in the face to one Anthony Bliar who believed that 50% of all school leavers should go to university, and we all know what chaos has resulted from that ideological wet dream!

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?
G-CPTN sez:— “There are currently no plans to increase the current maximum weight limit“.
Correct, but once the road transport lobby get to work on our feeble-minded MPs, just how long will it be before this proposal gains traction;
“The longer lorries will still have the same 44-tonne weight limit as those using standard trailers.
However, a spokesman for the Road Haulage Association urged the government to go further by increasing the permitted weight to 48 tonnes.
"This will be increasingly important when we roll out zero-emission trucks to compensate for the increased weight from batteries," he said“;
after which we can look forwards to some crackingly good road bridges!?
