Jan Smuts' birthplace near Riebeek West is now surrounded by a cement factory, but they have preserved the old house. It was part of a farm called Ongegond, some of which is now a residential estate where friends of mine live. There was talk of opening the cottage to the public as a museum but I don't think that will happen. There are some excellent wineries nearby, Allesverloren and Pulpit Rock being the best, in which to pass the time of day!
