you seemed to be implying that by saying she joined as a 'lowly 'second' lieutenant'
I sort of did imply that. OK Sub Lieutenant, or what the Marines call a Second Lieutenant. I'd been (mis?)informed on that she did a year in that rank and then the following year she simply didn't show up. A bit like Dubya in the ANG. I didn't mean to imply that her subsequent promotion to Hon Commander and then to Hon Captain was some kind of naval career progression. She's never had a proper military or commercial or industrial career outside politics. PPE degree, then into a Tory PR job, albeit with a brief sidespur as a PR wonk for Trump's Prez campaign.

In PR terms, the word 'promotion' is quite apt. It's a marketing campaign, a recruitment drive but with dollybirds instead of 1914-style recruiting Sergeants.

It'll be interesting to see if she can trump, so to speak, Sunak's access to hundreds of millions and his personal access to the media oligarchs and the billionaires who usually manoeuvre their preferred candidate into the top job.

Mordaunt was a member of the Royal Naval Reserve from 2010 until 2019.[1] From 2010 until 2015, she served as an acting sub-lieutenant, at shore establishment HMS King Alfred on Whale Island, Portsmouth.[81][82] In May 2015 she was placed onto Reserve 'List 6',[1] a category for personnel unable to meet any training commitment in excess of a year;[83] she had "no annual training commitment and received no remuneration" from the Navy during this time.[1] She remained on List 6 until April 2019, at which point she left the Reserve.[1]
This shows she was 'active' in the reserves from 2010 to May 2015 but as she then went onto the Reserve List this suggests she ceased training before May 2014. Being generous she was active in the reserve for around 4 years but did not collect enough box tops to even become substantive sub lieutenant.

I am going cold on her and note her support dropped yesterday. Of the bunch I think Truss will be the anyone but Rishi candidate.

I see Kemi Badenoch has been eliminated from The Contest. A pity. As a fan of "Blazing Saddles" I would have loved to hear the Speaker announce the new Prime Minister "its a ni...." and she could have reached for her speech and said "Let me whip this out... "

(Hope that's not offended anyone. Actually I don't give a damn if it has, having myself been called a "Bloody Ros'bif" for years.)

Can anyone really see Liz Truss as PM? If one can forget Government is supposed to be serious, her at the dispatch box will be hysterically funny...

Guy Fawkes, where art thy descendents now?

I can see trouble ahead in the UK no matter which one wins. Neither, in my opinion are up to the job.

Me: you'll never get a more ridiculous choice for PM than Johnson.
Liz Truss: hold my beer.

It's now up to the media oligarchs and the billionaires who own the print press to decide who to select.

The big money man? Or the vacuous bimbo who couldn't navigate her way out of a suburban cul de sac?

:-?

As I said a fortnight ago...
Do remember, based on the last 25 years, that Boris is only the worst Prime Minister Britain's ever had until the next one is appointed.

Having spent most, nay, all, of my working life in foreign lats and longs, I have a different perspective on the candidates for Premiership of our green (shudder) and present land to those resident in the UK, who think mainly of domestic matters. I see in my minds eye Mme Truss engaged with greasy and unprincipled foreigners over Bargaining Tables in the capital cities of Europe and frankly, she's going to be even worse than the unlamented May. I suspect Boris knows this and he's planning on coming back to rescue us when she burns out. Or if Nicola has her way, Burns out.

Sorry, "rescue".

Are the delays at Dover the result of extra checks due to Brexit (were things this bad before the 'EU'?), French incompetence (or maliciousness)? - or simply caused by the volume of traffic seeking to leave Dover?

There was talk of a major incident in the Tunnel.
What percentage volume of traffic travels to France by ferry?

It so frustrating when you cannot recall that elusive word, ~X( but don't worry Mr Fox; everyone has brain farts occasionally.
I think the word you were seeking is Brexit. Good try - you got the correct initial letter. :-bd
