I despair of UK politics. They spend a whole day arguing about Gaza, as a result of which The Speaker's position is now under threat. WTF has Gaza got to do with us anyway? Netanyahu won't even listen to his paymasters, let alone the politicians from some windy islands in the North Atlantic.

I think it's high time that all parties began to concentrate on the problems in the UK, like illegal immigration, which still continues apace, the ridiculous NHS waiting lists and our badly potholed roads.

You answered your own question.
Gaza matters to all the illegal immigrants, and quite a lot of the legal ones.
I expect Parliament is concerned that, after Rafah, Israel will start bombing Bradford, Luton, and Tower Hamlets soon...after Paris, of course ;)))

Ooooh no - not Paris. French tears would cause a tsunami in The English Channel (La Manche). The French would offer anything for Paris not to be destroyed - boatloads of Citroens, perhaps? :))

French tears...Nelson's bathwater

..and a Channel tsunami would at least solve one day's immigrant problem.

I'm surprised that the French have backed London as Europe's future financial centre. Of course the Germans wanted Frankfurt a.M or similar, so the French overcame their hatred of the British, because of their even greater fear and hatred of the Germans.

The British haven't invaded Metropolitan France since 1415, I think; the Germans a little more recently, and a lot more often.
But of course, there is a reason that the French Royal Standard has been adopted worldwide as the surrender flag :D

We have friends in France who twenty years ago ran a gite and looked after ten holiday villas own by British in their locality. All ten owners sold up and went back to the UK. Life in a small French village miles from anywhere looks idyllic until you actually have to live there and you discover why none of the French owners there stay Monday to Friday.

I think I can guess just why, OFSO, but would you care to elucidate?

A somewhat' controversial' Person recently purchased a 'rural' property in a small French Village with funds courtesy of an Aussie Taxpayer funded payout, and so far, has dropped off the radar so to speak. I wonder for how long the idyllic lifestyle will last! :-?

I know it's morally wrong to mock the afflicted, but when a mentally unstable person is set loose on the world - and especially when it's a British lunatic preaching to Americans - one can't help sniggering. Read to the end.

Pinky: no doctor, no baker or candlestick-maker, no doctor or nurse, no pharmacy, no schools..... Drive down from Paris Friday afternoon, drive back Sunday night. Bring what you need. That's what the French do. Five days of the week the average French village is deserted. And this is why you can buy an exquisite house, perhaps even a chateau, so cheaply in rural France. They - the French - don't want to live there and have moved to the nearest town or city.

My son married a French girl whose father (from a remote Southern hill village - not a tourist location - the residents are all related) who (the father) spent his working life as a diplomat at various embassies around Europe.

The village has zero - no bakery, no shop, just a vineyard.

I see 65 MPs have now called for the Speaker to go over the Gaza debate.

"I have served under three speakers. Lindsay Hoyle is head and shoulders above the rest.

"He is fair, kind and a protection of backbenchers. He is not a bully, nor a grandstander nor pompous. He has my full support."

Bully, grandstander, pompous? Who could Mr Wallace possibly mean?

Therein lies the problem. Relatively he may be better even if on an absolute scale he's utter crap.

"I have served under three speakers"
..and therefore not under Betty Boothroyd, whom the three subsequent ones were not fit to wipe the shoes of.
And TOCB* was what you would expect to find on the bottom of one's shoe in a dog-walking area.

*Not to be confused with the original TCB, the former PM.

'A garden was the primitive prison till man with Promethean felicity and boldness sinned himself out of it. Thence followed Babylon, Nineveh, Venice, London, haberdashers, goldsmiths, taverns, play-houses, satires, epigrams, puns—these all came in on the town part, and thither side of innocence.'
- will some enterprising person see an opportunity to fill the void with bakers and candlestick makers &c d'you think?

No.
Government taxes and regulations make it, in general, impossible for a small business to make a profit. Certainly for start-ups in small towns.
And that it turn makes it impossible for Government to run a balanced budget.
So they will bankrupt the fiat currency, all of them, to stay in power a little longer.
This is why we now have unfixable inflation everywhere.
And massive supply chain problems.

I see Liz Truss is being referred to as "the once and future fool". Rather neat, that.
Trump and the MAGA crowd have embraced her wholeheartedly. Good show.

Will our much valued (one-way) 'extradition' treaty with the US allow us to give them the Truss and the Farago?
