Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
Numerous responses possible to nip intrusive questioning in the bud:
"It's not important"
"It doesn't matter"
"Let's not talk about me"
"What interesting paint"
What a pity this came to that alleged stage.

The speed and style of William's response was admirable.

Lady Whatsit should have restricted herself to matters of fashion, such as asking "What a nice necklace of animal teeth you are wearing. Did any come from endangered species? "

Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
Was this really racist? Wasn't it more a case of an old lady being rude because she wasn't getting the answers to her questions. The black lady seems to have been just as aggressive. You would think most people would be happy to talk about their heritage.
Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
In the one photo I've seen of the black lady at the event you could be forgiven for thinking she was wearing some sort of African tribal dress.
If I saw someone wearing Lederhosen or a Dirndl I would ask if they came from Bavaria.

Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
I wonder if the supposed query about the colour of the baby originated with this woman?

Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
We only have one view of the conversation. Recollections may vary.
My daughter's maid of honour was asked by some Afro-American soldiers where she came from. "Nottingham". They then tried to do just as Lady Hussey is alleged to have said. She was puzzled and persisted with "Nottingham".
She had never been to the Caribbean and it never occurred to her to identify at Afro-Caribbean. She did not take offence.

Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
The woman who was asked the question said she felt "violated". I could have marginally believed her comment if she had been meeting Donald Trump, but she was talking to an 83-year-old lady with years of experience in the meet-and-greet arena.
Imagine the shock/horror if Lady H had said straight out " You look like you come from Brixton".
In playing the poor oppressed victim, she must have needed a big spatula to lay it on that thick. Of course, no prizes for guessing for who's side the BBC was gushing its support.

It's always my fault - SWMBO
Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
Unfortunately, 'racial' incidents like this (which are exacerbated by the 'victim' rather than being allowed to disappear) are picked up by the media - it's what the media does (create sensational stories out of insignificant events).
If the NR person was truly proud of their heritage, they would have responded with "I was born in Britain, but my ancestry originates in Africa."

Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
Apart from any possible 'racism' from the LiW, the really sad thing is that the media frenzy is set to seriously detract from the efforts of the Wales in the USA.

Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
As pointed out by Mrs PN and others, the woman was wearing pseudo tribal clothing. You are quite right and evidence the interest in many having their DNA analysed.
My paternal roots can be traced solidly to Westmorland. Similarly my maternal roots to Ireland. Imagine my surprise when I found my Irish roots were much more than 50%. Not only that but focused on just one township. OTOH I also had a small trace of Eastern Europe, ie Ukraine!
Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
So our King would say
"I was born in the UK but my ancestry originates in Germany and Greece." Yeah.

Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
I hear now that Willian and Kate have been booed by the audience at some event in the USA, presumably because they 'represent' the 'racist Royal Family'. A travesty indeed, and totally the wrong people to boo, but there we are - the 'Palace' has shot itself in the foot on this, and given huge credence to the Harry/Meghan saga. I guess it may be time for some significant house clearance.

Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
When my in-laws were alive, we had carers of both sexes, and all were from Africa. All lovely people. All were at some time or other asked about their origins. None took offence. When one was arrested (illegal immigrant) and 'lost' for months in various houses of detention, and released months later without charge, we traced him and helped him. And talked about his home country and how he could get back.
Coloured people, or foreigners, or whites, who take offence so easily are despicable.

Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
This is so sad, the P&PoW undertaking important engagements in the US while H&M throw tantrums and drum their heels in the corner.
I know it's the DM, and clickbait, but even a glance at the headlines and number of articles was quite disheartening this morning.
Drat them altogether.

Re: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
Agreed. Maybe she is ashamed of it ?You would think most people would be happy to talk about their heritage.
Why is it Racist and derogatory to ask which race one comes from, only those who are ashamed of their background might object, most would be pleased to proclaim it.
