Telegraph today
Just 748.6 people per 100,000 died last month as mortality rates fell even lower than April’s 851.2 people per 100,000, which was the lowest rate since records began in 2001.
The 7 day deaths in Gov.Uk were 72.
The rate per 100,000 is 0.1. Rounded up that would be 400 per month. The 72 rounded up that would be 288 per month.

Admittedly that 72 is 11% up on the previous 7 days, but is that 7 day figure a moving average?

I admit to bias. Professor Tim is a very good friend of a very good friend of ours. Mind you, so was Adolf Hitler...

Today's data shows the last 7 days cases up by 33% and deaths 18% compared with the previous 7 days.

Over the last 3 days cases and deaths have flat lined. As deaths tend to lag cases we might expect a modest rise.

An analysis by the BBC shows that during the three week period before Boris closed the border (well, sort of) to India, over 500 Delta CV infected passengers entered the country and disappeared into the community, although the BBC adds that the figure might have been 1000 or more, with the uncertainty due to testing problems. Track and Trace? God help us.

This comment makes sense to me; https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/arti ... -WREN.html

Unfortunately I suspect the UK government will continue their delay delay strategy....... :(

I think most people are coming out of lock down with only hard rules remaining. We have been to a couple of restaurants which seemed no less busy than normal except mask wearing and bar service. Outside tables spaced further apart but that was only better.
Shops with limited capacity, but what's not to like?
Buses not full, again better.

Only crowds seem to be banned in pubs, clubs etc. Beaches are crowded as rules are not really enforceable.

A niece, 25, in Exeter has just got Covid.

We were in Cornwall a week ago and there were few spots on Tim Specters map, now the SW is getting more and more cases. A BiL in Somerset says it is manic with people packing the place.

In our District in Lincolnshire cases up 40%. Lincolnshire is showing more dots too although our R is predicted at 0.9, the SW is 1.5.

That local cases are rising is true though nationally it looks steady at 10k. The real test is hospitalisations and the seriousness of the illness.

The only question I have is why the Government, and industry, all demand advance notice, notice that, as the date nears, can be cancelled.

If on the 14th they think the 19th is a good target date, but on the 21st it looks as if the 5th be possible, all you do is raise and dash hopes. The value of any warning time to industry is negated.

I understand that BJ does not want to keep doing a stop or go on restrictions but this current creep is perhaps worse. Why can't he speak with his committee this evening, wake up in the morning, see the Sun is shining and announce today is the day?

He wants to be Churchillian.

He wants to say something like:
If we can stand up to Covid, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the American Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their finest hour.’”

Announcement of application of restrictions in Catalunia has always been on very short notice, 48 or 72 hours. Removal of restrictions usually on a week's notice.

Hancock has just been on breakfast TV. He either suffers from dementia or is a chronic lier.

Headline 'news' this morning is that NippySweetie "is expected to" announce a delay in the lifting of the health regulations this afternoon.

It's called "being behind the curve", Sweetie!

If she insists on micromanaging down to each county and imposing different rules on different counties, then she's going to have to sort out her jumbled method of choosing which rules for which counties are covered by which regulations.

Here's how bad the situation on the ground actually is:

I can see problems with immediate application, but it was handled in just that way on 9/11. 12 hours could catch most long haul flights and 24 hours would catch travellers before they set off for an airport, although some would meet the deadline.

As we watch our self inflicted descent into economic disaster, courtesy of the latest gift from China, does it never occur to anyone to panic a bit less?
The 1918 Flu epidemic - aka The Spanish Flu, originated in the US at a US army camp.
Th American Flu never should have been called "Spanish". In fact, in Spain the infection rate was much lower than elsewhere, but because Spain was neutral and the press was not muzzled by the censor they gave truer reports of the infection rate than almost any other country in the world.

Let's not forget that over 50M people died in that one and that was long before the days of mass recreational travel and the world's population then was about an eight of what it is now. Can you imagine what the death toll would have been with the likes of Greasyjet and the Harpie mob and SouthWorst running amok?

Wankock has said the next winter's flu epidemic will be severe because as nobody had flu last winter, nobody has immunity for next winter. Perhaps someone could take him into a corner and explain that most people don't have immunity every winter because every winter there's a new strain* of flu.

* Ooh er. Did I hear the word 'mutation' ? We must all be doomed.

Scottish schools mostly break up for summer this week, so it’s going to be for a very short time 🤡🤡
Nicola Sturgeon says she hopes that as we go to level 0 physical distancing will go from 2m to 1m - it is already 1m in hospitality.

She says she hopes to remove the legal physical distancing constraints outdoors completely at that point and that from 9 August the legal requirement can be removed indoors, as long as we have gone beyond level 0. But some people may be advised to continue to keep to a safe distance.

She says it may be that in some settings, such as schools, masks may still need to be worn for a bit longer.
Edit - How is it possible to go beyond level 0 ?

'Cuz her Level Zero was set such that there could be no unauthorised public protests against her in public places by her own members of der Partei.

Do, please, try to keep up with Scottiewegian politics, Woody. There's a good chap.

As an English Catholic who went to a Scottish Protestant school in the late 70’s, early 80’s, I’ve had plenty of experience in Scottish politics :((

Just for information one of my best friends at school father was invalided out of the RUC after an IRA attack :-o
