(CNN Business)Cathay Pacific has fired three pilots after they were infected with coronavirus in the German city of Frankfurt.
The Hong Kong airline said in a statement that an internal investigation had found that the pilots were involved in a "serious breach" of Covid-19 procedures during "overseas layovers."
Other Cathay staff who have stayed at the same hotel in Frankfurt since November 1 have been ordered into a Hong Kong government quarantine.
"After investigation into these cases, regrettably, the findings indicate a serious breach of requirements during crew overseas layovers," the statement said. "The individuals concerned are no longer employed by Cathay Pacific," the statement said.
I recall that onceuponatime venereal diseases were regarded as self-inflicted diseases.
Social Diseases was the polite term.

I'm wondering if the idiots who refuse vaccination will also refuse the Covid medication when it becomes available in tablet/pill form.
The RKI reported about 65,000 new infections in Germany on Thursday, the ninth day in a row that a record for the pandemic has been set. Wieler said the true figure was likely to be at least two or three times as high.

The AfD party members attending the German parliament had to sit in the viewing gallery as they refuse vaccination or testing.
No need to shoot them. Germany has no ICU beds in reserve and is sending patients abroad, wherever that is.

News today: Germany is readying up Luftwaffe aircraft to move sick patients from areas with high to low Covid incidence. An F-104 with patients hung from the hard points under each wing, perhaps?

Scientists have issued a warning over a new Covid variant thought to be the most mutated version of the virus yet.
The variant was first spotted in Botswana, but six more cases have been confirmed in South Africa and one in Hong Kong. The variant has sparked serious concern among researchers because a number of the mutations could escape vaccines and evade immunity. Dr Tom Peacock, a virologist at Imperial College London, said the “incredibly high amount of spike mutations" suggest this could be of "real concern”. While cases are low, officials and scientists at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) are monitoring and investigating the variant.

I hope our Botswana correspondents are keeping themselves safe. The UK government has announced that all flights from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini are being suspended from 12.00 GMT tomorrow.
It's a pity they weren't so quick off the mark with the Indian variant.

This is a less hysterical report than the Daily Wails;
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/ ... lth-checks
It's all very well keeping variants out and vaccinating like crazy, but while lots of countries continue to struggle to vaccinate their populations these various variants will continue to develop, Especially as down here the numbers with HIV are so high and being immunosupressed means that mutations are more likely to occur in these people if they catch Covid.

Lots of “ could, maybe, unsure “ in the statement, also says that anyone who arrived in the last 10 days needs to take a PCR test, I left 11 days ago, but arrived back in the UK 10 days ago
When all else fails, read the instructions.

British nationals arriving from the six countries between 12:00 GMT on Friday and 04:00 GMT on Sunday, and who have been in these countries within the last 10 days, must quarantine at home for 10 days.
They must also take NHS PCR tests on day two and day eight after arrival, even if they already have a lateral flow test booking, the Department of Health and Social Care said.
Well it’s a bit late now, as my quarantine would have ended today and I don’t think that you can take retrospectively take PCR tests
When all else fails, read the instructions.

Look you lot, if no one can tell me how to retrospectively self isolate I might have to go to TOP and ask that fountain of knowledge K&C

Well you can't turn the clock back but I suppose you can have a PCR test to keep the Track and Trace bods happy.
An interesting article from the Groiniad:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/ ... ay-experts
Maybe the first world countries will eventually realise that we need to stop vaccine inequality to get out of this pandemic; otherwise it will go on for YEARS.
We've already given up on the idea of getting to Greece next year.
