With powerful computers available, the reaction/ affects of the virus should be compared across as many variables as can be identified down to the genomic level to possibly find a common denominator.
The US is far behind in sequencing the virus mutations as well.
They must attack the problem on multiple fronts and aggregate as much data as can be had.
All of this, plus careful analysis of antibody residual times from the various vaccines compared to virus mutations is also critical to the effort.

Presently in the US we are seeing a reduction in Covid cases, is this "real" or is it a result of reducing the number of cycles in the PCR test early in January thus reducing the number of false positives?

Amazingly, no one is commenting on this, you would have thought that some serious researchers would have an opinion. Appreciate this, the number of cycles in the PCR test was reduced on the advice of the WHO because they finally realised that there were too many false positives yet nobody I have heard has acknowledged the the reduction of PCR cycles could be a factor in the present decline of infections. Are these people dim or are they simply staying with the government script?

Now, hospital admissions for Covid are presently reduced, possibly because of a reduction in the number of people who are not being hospitalised due to false positive results. This can only be good because reports show that 20% of all Covid cases are actually caught in the medical system. Could it be that we are seeing a reduction in false positive cases leading to a reduction in the number of real Covid cases because less people are being fed into the medical system to become infected? Who knows without data but it would appear that a 20% reduction in Covid cases could be made by simply not sending people to hospital. Of course, this is not totally practical on a case to case basis but it is an interesting thought..

Who knows?? You are correct about the lack of virus sequencing in the US. One major US research group is expecting a significant jump in cases March/April in the US.

Boing, in UK hospital infection was said to be 40%. I think it unlikely that a person with a false positive alone would be admitted to hospital unless that is a consequence of private medical care.

Best tracking rates are perhaps admissions and deaths though even these are now emerging as subjective.

Last night we were shown two quite different death totals, one declared though the regular reporting and the second the ONS figures where Covid was on the death certificate.

As I say, the statisticians will have an field day and we will need to consider their allegiance when they reach a conclusion.

Report yesterday that in contrast to an average UK infection rate of 7% (and London is well below the average) the Stamford Hill Jewish community has one of the highest infection rates in the world at 75%. Reason is a general belief that the Covid restrictions on the public (masks, distancing) are against God's will.
