Haven't used an iron for years; it's in a cupboard taking up space. I think the last time I used it was for the shirt I wore at a family wedding about eight years ago.

Can someone explain to me what 'ironing a shirt' means, please.

Ben, too subtle for you cousins, a particular senior Tory in our Government, Jacob Rees-Mogg, is famously so far up the proverbial that he has I think 6 sprogs at the last count, a live in nanny, and I don't know what else. I think domestic appliances as far as he is concerned is that from the domestic appliances agency.

This washing/drying thing, an awful lot depends on climate.

On the highveld, Johannesburg/Pretoria area, using a Speed Queen washing m/c, one can wash and dry, cotton sheets in an hour!

On the humid KZN coast next to the Indian Ocean, it takes much longer. We sometimes have to resort to the tumble drier.

Proper cotton shirts need to be starched and ironed. That is done by the laundry/drycleaners. They come back nicely folded and packaged. Polo shirts (100% cotton) if hung to dry, must be ironed. If they are put in the dryer they come out soft and wrinkle free.
Because they stand on the wall and say "nothing's gonna hurt you tonight, not on my watch".

I haven't worn a starched shirt for donkey's years.

Though I could regale you with stories of the treatment given to RAF KD by genuine dhobi wallahs.

Ever see the Movie The Hill? To be recommended.

Harry Andrews as the WO1 changing his KD several times a day, was true to type.

In Aden we got our KD laundered and back in under the hour, your WO could indeed manage with just 3 sets in the day and changing more often.

At Butterworth the RAAF had laundry really sewn up. There was a Chinese family living in house in the mess grounds. They provided all the room cleaning and laundry. Personal laundry was extra at $M 1 per month. Superb value. However turn round time was weather dependent and could take a week.

Back when I was doing world-wide cargo in a classic 747 I found myself passing through Hong Kong and Dubai for a few days every month. I did about three years of that duty and got into the habit of leaving my uniform, shirts and pants, with the local launderer who specialized with aircrews. I learned that having a shirt laundered in Amsterdam for 5 euros was foolish.

The quality of the laundering was, to me, in both places, the standard of the world. The whites came out bright white, just the right starch, and the pants were perfect with a nice crisp crease (they were wool, not poly). So when I went off on my scheduled monthly round the world trip my suitcase contained a couple of fresh uniform items and a bag of laundry which I would leave in Dubai and Hong Kong, picking it up a month later. It was a beautiful system and made more space in my suitcase. The hotel in Dubai, which was extravagantly luxurious to begin with, included the laundry cost in the room rate, paid for by the company. It was free in Dubai and a dollar or two in Hong Kong. Win-win.

I find ironing quite enjoyable. I iron almost everything, included fitted sheets, which I will admit, are a bit of a pain!
I do it because Mrs S has severe arthritis and whilst she would iron clothes if I let her she would suffer agonies the next day. So I do it.

Come on fellahs, get to know your feminine side :)) :))

For a few more dollars you could have had a whole new uniform.

Do you put the fitted sheet on the bed and then iron it ? Much easier. :-bd

Heaven forfend Mr Ribrash! What common practices you seem to suggest. Must be done properly on an ironing board.

http://www.cannedlion.org/blog/sa-expor ... lion-bones
I am therefore of the opinion that uncontrolled exposure of humans to bones from animals, in particular lion bones, poses a risk for development of the form of TB known as bovine TB in particular, although not necessarily being limited to this form of TB only.
https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article ... -industry/
An investigation by Senior Inspector Reinette Meyer of the Bloemfontein SPCA found the slaughter conditions on a Free State farm she visited, Wag-’n-Bietjie, owned by lion breeder André Steyn, to be almost beyond belief and far from sanitary.

“It was shocking,” she said. “We couldn’t believe what was happening. You could smell the blood. The lions got shot in the camp and then were all brought into this one room. The flies were terrible.”

She discovered lions were being left in small, cramped cages. A total of 54 lions had been killed at the farm in just two days. They were first hit with tranquilliser darts before being shot dead with a .22-calibre rifle.

It is understood they were shot through the ear directly into their brains “because overseas buyers will not pay for damaged skulls”. Some of the lions are believed to have been trucked about 400km to the farm from a “safari park” near Johannesburg.

“Dead lions, some skinned and others waiting to be skinned, littered the bloodstained floor,” said Meyer. “A pile of innards and skeletons lay elsewhere inside, while discarded internal body parts were piled high in overflowing black plastic bags on a trailer outside.”

The farm’s permits have been revoked. Sava says TB can be transmitted to humans through accidental contact and through the consumption of animal meat or bone infusions such as lion bone wine. Lion meat, after the animal has been deboned, is also often given to communities, exposing them to harmful contamination. Head of Biomedical Sciences at Stellenbosch University, Prof Paul van Heerden, agreed that South Africa may be exporting tuberculosis through trade in lion bones.
I won't be shedding any tears if the people involved in this vile practice, and consuming lion products, all get TB or worse.

I didn’t realise our diplomats had been tricked into grovelling in front of the Chinese at a get-together?
This is a general chat about how well/badly the UK has managed with the Covid lockdown and the video starts the China section at 46’ 25” after the food advert.
“There has been an alarming increase in the number of things I know nothing about...”;

They also talk about the revenge taken against the Aussies for being brave enough to raise the topic of an investigation into the CCP and the coverup initially exercised.

Hope the spineless politicians here in Aussie have the guts to stand up to the Chinks re their placing an 80% tariff on our barley exports to them, this came aboutwhen we started the cry for an enquiry into the virus. They should try the court first,if that fails try a bit of tit for tat. Iron ore pricing might be a good way, seeing that Brazil is a bit stuffed with their socialist government at the moment.
