Wasn't there a protocol among the landed gentry that the firstborn son went into the military and the second (?) went into the church?
True, they generally shunted the dullard off to the clergy! :)

This premise was taken to its sublime denouement in the classic film...

Over my lifetime there have been times when I have been quite religious, and it is something I take quite seriously. I find Trumps antics yesterday unbelievably sickening. To have his minions teargas peaceful protesters to clear the road to enable him to walk across to a church, where he stood with a Bible, unbelievable. He is not a regular churchgoer and his pronouncements are the antithesis of everything a Christian believes in. What could he have hopped to achieve. I am beginning to believe he his seriously deranged.

Must have used up a lot of brain cells to write that. Are you sure you can afford it. Can't have that many left. Or perhaps you are supportive of Trumps actions.

My quote was made to infer that Trump was acting in a Godly manner by usurping the Church to infer that the people should 'listen to him'.

I neither support or condemn Trump (he is not my Supreme Commander), and I have learned that my opinions in political matters are irrelevant.

You will notice that I (as I did at TOP) avoid expressing personal controversial opinion - though I confess that I occasionally copy controversial media statements - it doesn't mean that I agree with them - this is done by me as a means to stimulate debate.

As to whether Trump is a God (other than in his own opinion) . . .

. . . no comment . . .

I can relate to what you say in some way. I was for a time a believer and a regular church goer. I am now an agnostic but believe the questions of morality, ethics and life raised by the religious impulse are fundamentally important and not to be ignored or belittled and feel that religion can still be a force for good in the world.

As for the rest of your comment, I can only agree.

+1

I 'grew up' in the Church - my much older sister was a Sunday School teacher (and she married the curate), I started as a chorister then a server, bellringer, and finally a choirman and performed many choral works (often with professional soloists).
I married into a 'humanist' family and realised that my father-in-law was a much better person morally than my brother-in-law (the vicar).

Five dead.

Four people had been found shot and burnt to death in cars, while a security guard, who was thought to have been responding to the incident, was also fatally shot.

What concerns me the most is the number of really intelligent people I've known who believe.

Alison, probably something many have wondered over...........I reckon Intelligence is quite loosely defined and qualities like a sharp wit or a photographic memory all get lumped together as intelligence.
I know people who can find a genuinely funny statement to fit any situation and diffuse violent situations with empathy and fine communication skills but couldnt couldnt be trusted with a computer..conversely there are master program creators who in converstaion wouldnt hold your attention for more than a few seconds

I would probably percieve both as being intelligent

“Bless you Father, for you have sinned and are sinning, bigtime, against your own religion!”

Talking of intelligence, was it wise of the Archbishop of Canterbury to throw in his lot with the BLM rebels?

Justin (Oil)Wellby should go on retreat and reflect on the damage he has done to an already fractured and failing institution. And it might do him good to listen attentively to this discussion and decide if and where lie his and the C of E’s priorities.

I’m glad I’ve heard a reasonable explanation for the shrinking congregations amongst the Christian fellowship versus the stable/increasing attendances at the mosques, some of which will be attributed to the Moslem birthdate.

The lockdown of churches during the Covid con is also dissected forensically and points to the stupidity of both Church, guvvment and PHE authorities’ utter incompetence and failure to assess the potential damage of their utterances.

I ceased to be a God-botherer somewhere near puberty but I am still concerned for those who need and have some sort of faith in the Judeo-Christian world.

Whenever I see or hear that term Woke, I am forced to reach for mein Luger... =))

barking you need to relax, sip a fine wine, smile beatifically at the birds (even the blackbirds), take in the air, be laid back and relax, take it easy... return to that happy place in the clouds and leave the incense and being incensed to other mythical fire breathing animals like dragons... :)
