Micro, macro, population they are all .....

What causes me doubt is time scale and measurement. Today we can measure temperatures and rainfall Globally to levels of accuracy not achievable even 50 years ago. Through various scientific disciplines we can back plot to earlier times and establish patterns but as we go further and further back so the time scales expand to even thousands of years.

I came across an environmental survey for the East African fibre network. It had no bearing on the climate change debate so its data was not intended to support any climate change position. Two figures stuck in my my mind 18,000 and 130 metres. The latter being the amount of sea level rise.

That is a uniform rise of 72 centimetres per century.

How does this compare to today's estimates?

Here is a snippet from a University of Plymouth study for Cornwall
Sea level is presently forecast to rise by about 0.5m over the next 100 years. However, there is large uncertainty attached to this and it could easily be more than 1m over the same time-frame. If the latter proves to be true, prominent structures on the coastline -- such as the Watering Hole bar -- will be under severe threat within the next 60 years.
Over that 18,000 years that average 72 cm is pretty close to 50-100.

The problem in indeed population. Over the millennia, as sea levels change so would people move further inland. If you look at the Western Isles you can see how habitation has crept inland away from the coast and prevailing westerlies. Where you have high population growth there is less space for populations to move too. In some countries land ownership and restrictions prevent movement. In others a desire for a beach front property in defiance of nature is the problem.

And that from the uni which is closest to Newlyn, home of the sea-level and QNH datum for at least the UK. Although doubtless the Frogs have got somewhere else just to rub in the salt from all that SI *****?!

Does this mean I might have to adjust my QNH sometime soon...? :(( =))

""OK Prospector.

Not a lot, but then there would be a dearth of volunteers to commit to killing themselves. But perhaps all the greenies that are so disturbed by global warming/climate change could show us how right they are by leading the way, if indeed overpopulation is the cause of the problem.

BM, the 130m/18,000 does not demonstrate 72 cm per century and the is no reason why it could not have been far more in some centuries. Strange the the University model came up with exactly the 18 000 year centennial average.

The other factor you haven't considered is post-glacial bounce.

It seems that Global temp is decreasing, and is now at the same value it was at 15 years ago.

Disagreements? No academic makes any money by agreeing with another. They make money by arguing an alternative view.
If one group takes a position 20 years ago they are not going to change their views in the short term as that would destroy their credibility. If 'new' information emerges 10 or 15 years later then they can change their position without loss of credibility.

That would be a crisis, albeit of a different nature, given all the vested interests.

A thought:

We are urged to save water by not rinsing dirty plates but to put them straight in the dishwasher.

We are also urged not to contaminate recycle waste and to rinse tins first.

Which is more important assuming you have a dishwasher and the dishwasher is only used when full of plates?

Put the tins in the DW.
Because they stand on the wall and say "nothing's gonna hurt you tonight, not on my watch".

Put the tins and dirty plates on the floor so that dogs can pre-clean them, easy peasy!
Been in data comm since we formed the bits individually with a Morse key.

Put the tins in the DW.
An obvious solution however if the dishwasher is only put on when full it follows that cans and plastics will displace crockery.
Then the paper wrappers will get washed off and clog the filter.

Next?

John, that works with ice cream tubs but not paper wrappers. Don't think we don't consider prewash.

Many years ago we had some decorative plates with a bull rush picture. One dog would lick that bullrush assiduously, probably thought it was a sausage.

How about fresh fruit packaging. A dishwasher safe tray, a bit of padding stuck to the bottom, some thin plastic seal top. Csn you read the impossibly small recycle stamp?

ASDA helpfully state on the label that the thin film can be recycled now, but what of the other grocers?

We burn all plastic containers, bags etc.
It puts the carbon back where it came from before some dinosaur absorbed it, in the atmosphere!

AK, and a quantity of toxic gases too. One reason why commercial incinerators have very high stacks and fume extractors.

That said, it is better to get rid of it personally rather than expect someone else to do it.

Apart from the return journey, I am minded to return packaging to store. Certainly some appliance retailers will remove packaging as well as removing the old appliance for a fee.

Yes Pontious.
We avoid breathing in the fumes, but its sooty appearance is also strong discouragement.

I see it as a 'Circle of Life' thing.

AK, aside from your personal pollution I bet that overall the air might be rather clearer. I wonder though if there is the same smell as in the Troodos mountains, burning shut which they seem to employ given the lack of mains sewage.

PN.
The air here is Crystal clear- I've never lived in a less polluted place.
The view of the stars and Moon are better than I've ever seen.

We are in a little village called Stefan Stambolovo also known as Gradina 'Garden'.

An incinerator attempts to operate at a high enough temperature that most of the toxic gases break down into more basic molecules. Doesn't take all of them out though.
