AK - out of interest I recall you shouting very loudly a while back to allow 'herd immunity' to solve the Covid pandemic. How do you view the succcess of that in India?

UP the only 30 year old single malt on the Vinmonopolet website is 8999kr for a 70 cl bottle, that works out at just over £780, you may want to reconsider your choice :D
In the land of Nog, the 'polet price for a bottla Mac25 is Kr17,000 (£1,500). In the UK, the advertised price for the same bottle is £2,500.

Quite surprising.

An advantage of grossly inflated wine prices due to punitive taxation is that if you're going to buy a bottle or a case of Claret or somesuch you might as well get the best that there is. Another advantage of the 'polet is that their buyers are buying for an entire country, and a very wealthy one at that. They can buy in volumes that even the biggest UK/German supermarkets can't compete with. This can mean that the Noggies can snap up the entire output of the very best vinyards and can drive a very hard bargain in price negotiations.

Then, of course, there's homebrew/distilling. It's technically illegal, but everyone does it. Even the most respectable supermarkets sell bottles of flavouring such as brandy or whisky or gin for adding to home-made raw spirit. The cops turn a blind eye so long as it's for personal consumption of a single household and is not sold.

My Norwegian Best Man is actually a customs officer and is well aware of the distilling, but as every year quite a few explode, it’s regarded as an activity that can ignored.

The price of good vintage whisky, as with very high quality watches, has exploded in the past coupla years due to the vast money 'printing' that has been going on.

All those billions have to go somewhere and they go to boosting asset prices. Or did you think that the free money goes to poor people?

Reassuring to see one P&CT thread worrying about the CV pandemic in India and moaning at my nasty remarks re birth control, has been joined by another deploring the cost of Vintage Whiskey, per case doubtless more money than the average Indian worker brings in over his lifetime. What do I know, all I can afford is Lidl whiskey.

No wokery in Glescae

#33 Post by Undried Plum » Sat May 01, 2021 9:50 pm

Have greatly enjoyed a convivial evening with a visiting neighbour, savouring a few drams of Mac30 and having lots of blethers and clatters. He's very familiar with the the circumstances which led to me always having had an ample sufficiency of the stuff for the past thirty or more years.

I mentioned the slightly nutty pricing arrangement they have in Norway for booze and why they have a predilection for good quality stuff. He asked me if I've been to the Bon Accord in Glescae. I hadn't, but I've just googled it.

Correct. when I drink spirits I drink brandy.

Its all Innsworth's fault!

At an impressionable age I spent a year in the South of France, and picked up a few Frog habits.
For an Englishman, I was different in that I even learnt the difference between Cognac and Armagnac! I prefer Armagnac.

A few years later Innsworth got in the act again and sent me to Akrotiri, another source of low cost brandy, though some was of very questionable quality. But I quickly became skilled in the art of making a Brandy Sour.

Today, purely on economic grounds these days I drink SA brandy.
It is cheap & plentiful, so I'm happy.

At times I even 'go native' and occasionality drink Klippie's & Coke! (TGG can translate.)

You'll all be delighted to learn that in the interests of 'equality' the Prison and Probation Service Transgender Advisory Board (UK) is proposing that tampons are made available for sale in over a hundred men-only prisons. Yes, really.

FtM transgenders still menstruate even if they have had their breasts removed. I am not sure about their HRT and the extent to which Testosterone injections affect such functions. So your post OFSO doesn't really seem worthy of comment.

Boac.
Well, it's going to solve it.
And frankly, I don't think the lockdowns have done very much, apart from bankrupt half the country.

Perhaps, Alison, I should have reproduced the whole article: which pointed out that among the inmates of over a hundred male prisons, only two (2) individuals were in the category you mention, and were awaiting transfer to prisons for female offenders.
