Afghanistan (where the war is over)
Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
The analysis of the last Kabul drone strike is sad reading. Whoever 'pulled the trigger', either on his/her own or on instruction, must be feeling pretty bad.
Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
Maybe, but I am sure they have been trained to handle such anguish and they might even get decorated for their 'service'. See USS Vincennes and Iran Air flight 655.

Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
I think I would need more than an 'apology'.
Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
There will be no apologies for the last 20 years in Afghanistan. But I am confident they will still get their medals.
Despite the mistakes made in the downing of the plane, the crew of USS Vincennes were awarded Combat Action Ribbons for completion of their tours in a combat zone. The air warfare coordinator on duty received the Navy Commendation Medal,[13] but The Washington Post reported in 1990 that the awards were for his entire tour from 1984 to 1988 and for his actions relating to the surface engagement with Iranian gunboats.[84] In 1990, Rogers was awarded the Legion of Merit "for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as commanding officer [...] from April 1987 to May 1989". The award was given for his service as the commanding officer of Vincennes from April 1987 to May 1989. The citation made no mention of the downing of Iran Air 655.

Dresden, trench warfare and "going over the top" in WW1, the Amritsar Massacre, our own little adventure in Afghanistan. Stupidity, accident and excess have been a mark of all military actions including those of the UK. How many Generals were disgraced?

Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
From my own experience I agree with that last line. Americans tend not to see 'foreigners", and especially middle Eastern foreigners, as "real people". This underestimating of foreigners worth is why Afghanistan and Vietnam happened.

Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
Replace "worth" by "abilities" in above post.
Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
In terms of medals, John, the actual strike was technically carried out with perfection. It is just that whoever decided on the target needs strapping across a canon muzzle - in the NK style you are familiar with.

Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
In a ghastly way, there's almost something appropriate about the Septics murdering children as a last gasp of Imperialist Fascism in Afghanistan.
Characteristically, they lied about the victim(s) being a terrorist on his way to a car bombing. As if to prove the innocence of the murderers, they claimed that secondary explosions proved that it had been a car bomb.
What is needed is an International War Crimes Tribunal to try the hundreds of Americans (and any Brits) who have participated in such crimes during the assault an occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Instead, the man who published video evidence of a massacre of civilians in a Baghdad is languishing in Belmarsh maximum security prison, the only political prisoner in England.
The former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan, who sent a secret cable to the Foreign Secretary (Jack Straw) pointing out that British complicity in the American torture programme is a crime under international law and was fired for doing so, is languishing in Edinburgh's Saughton Prison in solitary confinement for twenty two and a half hours a day. Scotland's only political prisoner.

Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
We do have an International Court of Justice but the Septics have excused themselves from that.

This thing with the 'Royal Cradle Robber', they should offer to exchange him for the 'Diplomatic Hit and Run' woman.

Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
That's how the Hanoverians conquered the stripey mob on your island, dear boy.
Sadly, we did not show or teach more than one vowel in human communication.
Hence, you have been cut off from civilisation and don't want nukes and stuff.

The striped ones do not feel conquered.
We were in on the ground floor of that nuke making business and if we wanted them we should be able to make them ourselves.

Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
Given enough processed uranium (preferably not all in one place), it's fairly trivial to make a small device. The hard part is getting the fissile material in the first place, which is why there's all the uproar about Iran and NK building plants to produce it.
Re: Afghanistan (where the war is over)
Why shouldn't countries such at Iran and North Korea have nuclear weapons for their defense?
