State of National Emergency declared.
Minister for Emergency Management Kieran McAnulty has confirmed a national state of emergency was declared at 8.43am.
In a statement, he said this was only the third time New Zealand has declared a national state of emergency
He said the declaration would apply to the six regions that had declared a local state of emergency: Northland, Auckland, Tairāwhiti, Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and Hawkes Bay.
“The local leadership, CDEM groups, and emergency responders in all of the affected areas have been doing an outstanding job, but the widespread damage caused by this cyclone means we need a National declaration to support them," he said.
“A National State of Emergency gives the National Controller legal authority to apply resources across the country in support of a national level response."

Hope all our Kiwi posters have weathered this storm safely. Sorry to read of the damage and wish all the best to New Zealand in bouncing back from this disaster.

I am on the Kapiti coast, we have had no flooding, something like 11mm rain las 24 hours, wind is now getting up from the SE, gusting 77kmh, wind is likely to freshen a little over the next few hours but looks like the rain has bypassed Paraparaumu. (Lower SW coast North Island)

In North Canterbury there is a forecast of possibly heavy rain and strong wind from later tonight until tomorrow night as the tail of the cyclone passes down the east coast. It looks like we've got off easily this time down here, unlike the poor souls up north - fingers crossed. So far we've just had a few spits and spots.

Correct - Far North, just inland from Bay of Islands. We have got away with no damage, other than the mail box at the end of the drive blown over ! Very heavy rain and wind on Monday, less rain Tuesday but heavier gale force winds from time to time. Fortunately the house is reasonably sheltered - by trees that could have blown on to it I guess - but didn't! Roads to the South closed by floods and downed trees, but we didn't have to go anywhere. Many others not so lucky.

Now Tuesday evening, sun shining and wind dropping, guess this part of Northland NZ has escaped the worst of it tho' 11 metre waves were forecast for the road fronting Paihia on the waterfront.

Many incredible pictures of severe damage further South.

I've lost count now of the number of recent disruptions to the inter-island ferry services in the last couple of months:
A technician is urgently travelling to New Zealand to assess the Interislander’s Kaitaki ferry after a problem was found with one of her gearboxes.
The ship is expected to remain out of action for at least two weeks.

Meanwhile, Interislander has disabled Facebook comments on its posts to devote resources to communicating directly with passengers.

Both Interislander and rival operator Bluebridge have been hit with breakdowns and engine problems in recent weeks, disrupting the travel plans of thousands of passengers.

The latest problem, the Kaitaki’s gearbox, was identified less than 24 hours after the ferry began passenger sailings for the first time in five weeks.

It has been doing freight-only sailings since it lost power and issued a mayday call in Cook Strait with 864 people on board.

The Kaitaki resumed passenger sailings on Saturday but that night a fault in a bearing in one of the ferry’s two gearboxes was found when the ship was in port in Wellington. ...

What alternative options exist?
Passengers and freight booked on the Kaitaki yesterday and today have been moved on to other ferry sailings.
