Re: For heaven's sake.
Mostly fear and exaggeration, Plum
Also I noticed a brief mention of 'a more equal World'- a typical socialist trope- and be in no doubt, there are lefty politics running through COP 26 like the writing on a stick of rock.
But hey, I've no objection to tree planting, wind turbines etc- just don't ask me to foot the bill! I object to everyone, even the poorest, having to choke up an extra 20% to hand out to the Wind Turbine companies- don't you?
I'll drive an electric car if you buy me one, but otherwise I'll stick with the two I have- one 21 years old, the other 56!
Frankly, I see what's coming. More control, more laws and more taxes.
How long before the law regulates how much Carbon you emit, or how much you can fly?
These bloody greens would have us living in mud huts eating beans if the could.

Re: For heaven's sake.
Tree planting is admirable and vital, but just as important is stopping the destruction of primary forest. Chopping down a 200 year old tree and trying to justify doing so by planting 200 saplings to replace it is absurd. Doing so by planting a monoculture of palm oil trees is even worse.
The consumers of palm oil products should be made to pay for the destruction of the primary forests which is involved in palm oil production. The consumers of products and activities which involve the burning of hydrocarbons should be made to pay for the damage that they do.
In most cases, though not currently in some mass jet travel, there are alternatives. We should encourage those who destroy the environment to try to understand what they are doing. Making them pay will concentrate the minds of the mindless and the unthinkers who are causing the most damage.
I doubt that any of the occupants of those 400 jets which have carried them to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Prestwick have either sense of irony or a sense of shame. They are insensible, especially the ones who spout the Blah blah blah and who will then eschew rail or electric road travel and go in luxury jets instead. Sure, for some it is inevitable that they must travel by air on the really long haul routes, but that fascist EU bitch who routinely uses a private jet to travel as little as 31 miles should hang her head in shame if she doesn't take the train back to Brussels.

Re: For heaven's sake.
Had a presentation yesterday by an estates manager, he thought that tree planting on otherwise productive arabal land in England was idiotic as we would need to import the produce that we could have grown here.
Our next presentation is woodlands trust.

What is truly idiotic is feeding human food to machines. That's what "biofuel" involves.Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Tue Nov 02, 2021 9:44 pmHad a presentation yesterday by an estates manager, he thought that tree planting on otherwise productive arabal land in England was idiotic as we would need to import the produce that we could have grown here.
The only biomass derived energy that makes any sense is using timber waster products, such as brash and bark, to fuel generation of electricity.

I agree using waste is better than using the tree, but it does not come free.Undried Plum wrote: ↑Wed Nov 03, 2021 8:53 amThe only biomass derived energy that makes any sense is using timber waster products, such as brash and bark, to fuel generation of electricity.
You need to collect and ship. You need to process and dry. You need to get the product to the furnace. Your biproduct is more CO2.
As a wise man said:
“Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another.”

Re: For heaven's sake.
Timber needs to be used in construction of all sorts of things and places. Nowt wrong wiv felling trees. In the Lake District they say that if you want trees you've got to cut trees. A coppiced piece of woodland lasts four or five times longer, per standing tree, than an identical piece of woodland left on its own.
In all tree felling there is waste, such as brash and bark. Burning that waste to create electricity seems to me to be a fair payoff which is endlessly sustainable.

Which must be balanced with the cost of conversion. As you know, biomass for Drax comes from Canada and they get a Government subsidy too.

Re: For heaven's sake.
Quite apart from the Eco-Shite we are all being forced into agreeing with, am I the only one getting mightily hacked off with the State getting ever more involved in our lives?
Am I the only one who wants the State to back off, and leave me alone?
For fuxxackes!
I can decide what I think, what my opinions are and they don't have to agree with the Governments
I can make up my own mind about how much meat I want to eat
I will drive the car I want and can afford, not the car the State allows me
I can choose how to heat my home- it's no business of the Government how I do it.
I could go on, but I'm sure you get my drift.
It's ripping my knitting!

Which 'state' is doing that to you? I thought you lived abroad?

Re: For heaven's sake.
I'm talking about the UK. It's still my homeland, the land of my Birth etc. I still care about Scotland- but yes we live in Bulgaria.
In fact, it's living abroad that sharply increases the contrast between how bloody weird the UK has become, and how very very different things are elsewhere.
Before living here we were in Kazakhstan (which isn't perfect- but is still much better than the UK) and before that, in India- free-est of all the places we have lived, probably.

"Am I the only one who wants the State to back off, and leave me alone?" I'm puzzled as to what the UK 'state' is actually doing to you? Can you explain?

Re: For heaven's sake.
It's doing it to you, not me. But if/ when I return, it'll be my turn!
The thing that hacks me off the most is how the citizens of the UK will put up with this constant meddling in their lives- do you like it bo?
Rip out your boiler, buy a leccy car, pay green taxes.... etc etc etc
You guys will put up with anything! Worse, I think some of you like it...
btw, once again I have become a UK taxpayer- I'll spare you the details- so feel entitled to carp.

"once again I have become a UK taxpayer" That's clever in Bulgaria.
"if/ when I return" - the way this all ??'boils your piss'?? - is that the correct language? - I suggest you don't.
"do you like it bo?" Not particularly, but I understand things need to change.

I'll tell you the Truth- Pravda, as they say in Russia.
The British have lost the plot.
You have become a nation of wankers.
Do what you want.

Re: For heaven's sake.
boac.
You suggest I don't come back.
I'll come back if I fcuking want to, and wankbags like you have got nothing to do with it.
You lefty scum are going to ruin the UK, and you'll be happy to see it ruined.
It's too late now, but arseholes like you should have been shot years ago. I don't even live in the UK, but I care about it, and its culture more than you do, you utter fanny.

That's what I come here for: intelligent and informative and intelligent debate.
Re: For heaven's sake.
This happy leftyscum wankbag arsehole fanny (an interesting anatomical combination) is merely observing that it would appear you would not be wise to return. Good luck Bulgaria.Er Der Krieg ist verloren verlorn...??
Do keep up the brilliant, intelligent prose, however.
