It is amazing that some still hold to the 'cowardly French' motif over the 2003 invasion of Iraq. This is after the Chilcot enquiry and now frequent calls for Bliar to be 'tried for war crimes' over his support for the invasion.

With the disaster that Iraq went thorough after, leading to ISIS, Afghanistan, the Syria 'problem', etc etc, surely it is time to recognise the French might have been right?

Was it right to invade Iraq looking for the mythical 'WMD' without a coherent plan for the subsequent security and infrastructure in Iraq?

Today's scuttlebutt is that France will purchase 40 Mirage 2000 back from UAE to donate to Ukraine.
This sounds reasonable as the UAE recently signed up to replace their Mirage 2000 with Rafale.
Rumour also is that the French have already trained some Ukrainians to fly Mirage 2000. Possible.

Muradov, the Russian general who conducted the disastrous assaults on Vuhledar, and got blinged up for it by putin, has today been dismissed.
One awaits news of his tragic suicide.
And it will be tragic - everyone loves an incompetent enemy. Unless of course they've found an even bigger idiot to replace him.
Said replacement certainly looks as if he were given another brain cell, it would be lonely!

Portuguese Leopard 2s have arrived.

British Challenger 2s on duty

This tweet has a link to an interactive map showing all the Russian fortifications built to date.
Note that the concrete pyramids have not been dug in, as they should be, and any bulldozer-type engineering vehicle (like the Bergepanzer Leopards the Canadians have just delivered) can shift them easily.
Furthermore, the fortifications and trench systems are not continuous. Get behind them and they are as useless as the Maginot Line.

I thought the love of French for white flags come from the two world wars rather than the 2003 plot. Although I agree with having a plan for a coherent plan

Today's stories are probably connected:

Zelenskyi basically says there'll be no counterattack yet because they don't have enough weapons and ammo.
Although the President's Office have said he isn't delivering an ultimatum.

France announces doubling of 155mm ammo provision to Ukraine.

Bulgaria announces it absolutely is not sending hundreds of thousands of rounds of Russian-calibre ammo to Ukraine.
Oh, no no no no no.
However it will soon be selling hundreds of thousands of rounds of Russian-calibre ammo to several European countries who don't have any Russian-calibre weapons and donate to Ukraine.

Remember, nothing is true until it's officially denied ;)))

Lots of ERA added.
Smoke dispensers now inop as they are covered - this tank will not be retreating.
Fire extinguishers up front. I think this is to put out brush fires when the tank fires from in natural cover.
I understand this was a big issue last Summer and Fall with all equipment in Ukraine - dead giveaway of position.

Sadly, yes. Toronto (AKA The centre of the Universe) is full of Libtartd ideologues and don't forget the Maritimes where Liberals ship our money to buy votes.

And don't even get me started on the 4 seats that PEI has for the population typically in one riding elsewhere.
Because they stand on the wall and say "nothing's gonna hurt you tonight, not on my watch".

May The Force Be With Them

Mark Hamill lends ‘Star Wars’ voice to Ukrainian air-raid app

https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukrai ... 90079f00f9

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — “Attention. Air raid alert,” the voice says with a Jedi knight’s gravitas. “Proceed to the nearest shelter.”

It’s a surreal moment in an already surreal war: the grave but calming baritone of actor Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker of “Star Wars,” urging people to take cover whenever Russia unleashes another aerial bombardment on Ukraine.

The intrusion of Hollywood science-fiction fantasy into the grim daily realities of war in Ukraine is a consequence of Hamill’s decision to lend his famous voice to “Air Alert” — a downloadable app linked to Ukraine’s air defense system. When air raid sirens start howling, the app also warns Ukrainians that Russian missiles, bombs and deadly exploding drones may be incoming.

“Don’t be careless,” Hamill’s voice advises. “Your overconfidence is your weakness.”

HAMILL LENDS VOICE TO AIR-RAID APP
00:00
In an audio excerpt, actor Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker of “Star Wars,” urges Ukrainians to take cover whenever Russia unleashes another aerial bombardment
The actor says he’s admired — from afar, in California — how Ukraine has “shown such resilience ... under such terrible circumstances.” Its fight against the Russian invasion, now in its second year, reminds him of the “Star Wars” saga, he says — of plucky rebels battling and ultimately defeating a vast, murderous empire. Voicing over the English-language version of the air-raid app and giving it his “Star Wars” touch was his way of helping out.

“A fairy tale about good versus evil is resonant with what’s going on in Ukraine,” Hamill said in an interview with The Associated Press. “The Ukrainian people rallying to the cause and responding so heroically ... It’s impossible not to be inspired by how they’ve weathered this storm.”

When the dangers from the skies pass, Hamill announces via the app that “the air alert is over.” He then signs off with an uplifting: “May the Force be with you.”

Hamill is also raising funds to buy reconnaissance drones for Ukrainian forces on the front lines. He autographed “Star Wars”-themed posters that are being raffled off.

“Here I sit in the comfort of my own home when in Ukraine there are power outages and food shortages and people are really suffering,” he said. “It motivates me to do as much as I can.”

Although the app also has a Ukrainian-language setting, voiced by a woman, some Ukrainians prefer to have Hamill breaking the bad news that yet another Russian bombardment might be imminent.

On the worst days, sirens and the app sound every few hours, day and night. Some turn out to be false alarms. But many others are real — and often deadly.

Bohdan Zvonyk, a 24-year-old app user who lives in the repeatedly struck western city of Lviv, says he chose Hamill’s voiceover rather than the Ukrainian setting because he is trying to improve his English. He’s a “Star Wars” fan, too.

“Besides,” he said, “we could use a little bit of the power that Hamill wishes us.”

Equipment:
Swedish CV90s reported on the move to Ukraine.
First Spanish Leopard 2s will be right sent after Easter.
This seems like an honest slight delay. The original date given last week turned out to be Good Friday.
Ukes taking Opsec of locations of kit once it's in Ukraine very seriously. Good. Someone put up a pic this morning of the French AMX-10RCs in a Ukrainian warehouse. It was pulled and the Ukes may be moving the AFVs' location.

Preliminaries:
Melitopol locomotive depot and airport hit last night.
Russian commentators seem to think the Ukes may cross the Dnipro in boats for the coming assault.

I think it's possible, but at least initially will be a diversionary attack by SF mainly. I do not think they can get enough equipment safely across fast enough to make it an initial main assault direction.

Propaganda:
Possibly significant - a fake Russian Government 'Ukrainian troops oppress civilians' video has been deleted from Russian networks (officially) after the location was identified by western OSINT bloggers as inside Russian-held territory, along with several other continuity errors.
They have not taken down, to my knowledge, any of their earlier staged lies. So, it appears that Russians are now generally sensitive to their own government's lies. Just like the western media pulling stories that are discovered not to fit the narrative.

I'm just waiting for the online Chinese drone ads to start including stuff like:

"Can be fitted with 3 kg RPG warhead (not included)!"

"Deluxe model has 3 confirmed tank kills in Ukraine"

"Software includes 5GHz wifi code for linking to your favourite artillery allocation App"

"Alexa, take out that traffic warden!"

Reports and claims continue of strikes on Russian EW gear. Reports starting again of strikes on fuel and ammo dumps.
Assorted secondhand drip-feed information about the new Ukrainian AFVs being readied for combat,

Either Ukraine is about 3 weeks away from being able to launch a counterattack, or their intelligence/PR machine wishes the Russians to think that.
Judging from the decrease in Russian combat losses in the last couple of days, the reports of decreased Russian attack activity, and all the vehicle movements and defensive preps being reported, the Russians DO think that.

Bakhmut in the snow. It will be 16 degrees Celsius in a week.

Reuters states that Monday the USA will announce the provision of a new package of military aid to Ukraine in the amount of about $2.6 billion.

Question is: Will there be new/more toys for the upcoming offensive, delivered in time?

Soloti, Belgorod Oblast
(just north of the Russia-Ukraine border, almost directly north of Svatove)

From what I can work out:
Soloti has 2 functions,
It's a basic military training camp for troops about to be deployed to the front line in Ukraine.
It's a major storage depot for transport - troop trucks, cargo truck, and fuel trucks. Looks like they have the facilities for 2nd/3rd line servicing.
The second function is what's relevant. It is likely the forward depot for the northern front (Svatove, Kreminna, Starobilsk).

They've either decided to relocate the depot in Ukraine, or they have run out of reserves for road transport. I suspect the latter.
Judging by the numbers seen and their distribution, it's quite possible every vehicle randomly positioned we can still see is a terminal case/Cat 5.
It would explain why the Ukes appear to have been concentrating on destroying road transport recently, especially fuel trucks.
When the Uke counterattack comes, the Russians will need to reposition rapidly. No fuel trucks/road transport = no repositioning.

World Food Programme projecting 345 million food-insecure worldwide this year, more than double last year (200 million increase)
Major factor is fertilizer prices affecting food affordability. The problem is likely to include food availability shortly, as less crops are planted and those that are get lower yields in many places.
They are blaming the war in Ukraine for most of it. Whilst it sure isn't helping, the World Bank graphs clearly show that most of the fertilizer precursor prices were rising rapidly before the war. It's the Net Zero agenda that's the real cause.
https://blogs.worldbank.org/opendata/fe ... her-longer
Note that the third graph starts at 2021 and prices around $750/mt, and attempts to show the effect of the war. However, the longer term graph above clearly shows that the previous decade saw typical prices around $300/mt, and prices rose by 250% during 2020-2021, well before the war.
