Satellite images hint at scale of Russian mercenary group's losses in Ukraine
Aerial photos of a cemetery on the outskirts of the Russian village of Bakinskayat suggest a sevenfold increase in the number of graves in just two months.

The number of graves at a cemetery used by Russia's notorious mercenary Wagner Group has dramatically grown over the last two months, satellite images show.

A photograph taken on Jan. 24 by Maxar Technologies, a U.S. defense contractor headquartered in Colorado, shows at least 121 burial plots in a section of the cemetery allotted to fighters from the private military company.

An image of the same area taken on Nov. 24 appears to show around 17 graves, suggesting that in two months there has been around a sevenfold increase, according to an NBC News analysis of the site on the outskirts of the village of Bakinskaya, in southwestern Russia.

The apparent expansion at the site, which is situated around 200 miles from the border with Crimea, comes after Wagner Group fighters were belatedly credited earlier this month by Russia's defense ministry with taking the town of Soledar in eastern Ukraine, which saw some of the war’s most intense combat.

https://media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com/imag ... cc40ce.gif

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, said troops from his irregular private army had taken the salt-mining town two days before the official announcement. He later griped that the Russian military was “constantly trying to steal Wagner’s victory.”

Prigozhin, a longtime ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and former restaurateur, has recruited former prisoners as soldiers for hire in Russia’s war on Ukraine, promising bounties and pardons in exchange for service. The Wagner Group previously provided assistance to the Russian military during conflicts in Syria and Libya.

Acknowledging Soledar's fall for the first time on Wednesday, Serhii Cherevatyi, a spokesman for Ukraine's forces in the east, said his country's troops had now moved away from the town to previously prepared defense lines, “in order to preserve the lives of the personnel.”

He added that added Ukraine had inflicted “huge losses” on Russian soldiers comparable to “the losses of the aggressor in the two Chechen wars.”

Two weeks ago, similar aerial photos taken around the nearby city of Bakhmut revealed the devastation of ruined buildings and bomb craters in the strategically significant city, by comparing the same areas pictured in August and then again in January. These images were also released by Maxar Technologies.

The U.S. government said last week that it will designate Wagner Group as a “significant transnational criminal organization” and impose further sanctions against the organization and its support network.

The Wagner Group did not comment on the satellite images and video.

This morning's Russian missile strike

47 out of 55 shot down

https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/01/26/7386608/

I hesitate to use the word pathetic, because people have been killed and the odd bit of infrastructure destroyed,
but if this is the best the Russians can manage then they haven't a hope of winning.

The Russian Armed Forces are doing this because they've been told to do something, not because it makes the least military sense.
It's just a spectacular waste of money.

Canada looks likely to send Leopards, unknown how many.
Rumour Control says 10+
Former Head of the Canadian Armed Forces wants to send 50, like the Former Head of the UK Armed Forces wants to send 50 Challengers.
50 is a good number, 4ma will know why!

Ukrainians asking again for ATACMS rockets.
It's a good argument, and since the US is now sending Abrams and about to announce F-16s, I doubt there is still a good reason why not.

https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/01/26/7386594/

Obviously, it would be best if the announcement came on Telegram from the sole survivor of a Russian ammo dump explosion 120 km behind the lines,
or shots of a new hole in the Kerch bridge.

All 24 Shahed drones sent out by Russia last night were shot down.
They stopped sending them at the same time as the cruise missiles as they are slower, and they just served to wake up the Ukrainian Air Defences.

Again, the only reason they can be bothering is because they have them and the Air Force is under pressure to "do things".

The only questions remaining to the Russian military are:
How quickly can we get the trained mobiks to the front?
How quickly can the Ukes get the newly promised tank brigades to the front?
Will those tanks be able to exploit breakthroughs?
Will the Ukes get long range precision weapons?

On the political front, will the western allies of Ukraine start backing off on support, for whatever reason (icluding economic troubles at home)?

I think putin is playing for time and hoping for an economic crash in the west. He has no other options. He will sacrifice any number of Russian soldiers in his play for time.

Canada may only send 4 Leopards.
Here's why:

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opin ... ty-partner

I suspect the same may be true of Germany, and indeed a number of other nations.

One is finding out who lost their swimsuit now the pool is being drained.

There will be an awful lot of of senior military and politicians, in a lot of NATO countries, who are glad they only have to provide equipment, and not the personnel.

After the German Foreign Minister stated "we are at war with Russia", a number of other nations (including France, today) are busy saying they aren't, and neither is Germany
Annalena Baerbock is another of those political science graduates who's never had a real job, and has been promoted to high office as a box-ticking exercise.

That said, with the exception of Ben Wallace, you will struggle to find a single Foreign Affairs Minister or Defence Minister who has ever had a real job, or knows one end of a rifle from the other.

But at least the French Foreign Minister has served in the Diplomatic Corps, and knows what should and should not be said.

Announcement by the Canadian Defence Minister about Leopards in an hour.
Same non-job background as the German Foreign Minister, mostly a law lecturer. Probably taken her this long to find out what a tank is.

She is clearly as thick as a tank, or should that be 2 short tanks!

From which I conclude that Canada actually has 8 working, supportable Leopards, but they need 4 kept in Canada in case the Minister wants a photo op.

Maybe we could send submarines instead =))

Based on what Ananad (and the rest of the cabinet) knows about defence it wouldn't surprise me if they offered submarines. It's a weapon, no?

AFAIK, the most damaging things in Trudeau's arsenal are woke policies and the CBC. Maybe we can send those ... hopefully to Russia :D

"" US taxes well spent."" Wonder how many US taxpayers would agree with that utterance. A majority of them would not even know where Ukraine is, let alone give a stuff about what is happening there.

It appears even the inhabitants of Iowa support Ukraine.

The Govenor of Iowa's decision will really scare Vlad.

" The State of Iowa has announced new measures to further demonstrate its solidarity with the brave people of Ukraine as they defend their freedom against Putin’s tyranny.

Today, Governor Reynolds has directed the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD) to remove any Russian-produced alcoholic liquor products from its wholesale purchase list. On or before March 1, 2022, all delisted products will be posted on the ABD website."

Well, that's the joy of the US just supplying the weapons - the Ukrainian operators can find Ukraine on a map :D
