EU blacklists 21 Russian airlines over 'serious safety concerns'

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/eu-r ... index.html

Brussels (CNN) — The European Union has blacklisted 21 Russian-certified airlines, including national carrier Aeroflot, over "serious safety concerns."
The move, which prohibits the airlines from entering EU airspace, comes after Russia's attempt to beat sanctions imposed in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.
Last month, President Vladimir Putin authorized the seizure of US and European-leased commercial aircraft, allowing them to be reregistered and issued with local certificates of airworthiness to keep Russia's domestic services running and make it harder for the jets to be reclaimed.
In doing so, the EU said Russia was deliberately allowing foreign-owned aircraft to continue to fly without meeting safety standards.
"The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency has allowed Russian airlines to operate hundreds of foreign-owned aircraft without a valid certificate of airworthiness," the European Commission said in a statement.

Announcing the ban, European Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean said that "the Russian airlines concerned have knowingly done so in breach of relevant international safety standards."
The EU's decision to add the airlines to its Air Safety List comes more than a month after the 27-nation bloc banned all Russian aircraft from its airspace in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
''We do not mix safety with politics'
But Vălean said the latest decision was purely a matter of aviation safety.
"I want to make it crystal-clear that this decision is not another sanction against Russia; it has been taken solely on the basis of technical and safety grounds," she said.
"We do not mix safety with politics," Vălean stressed.
The EU added that "the situation will continue to be closely monitored in the coming weeks and months, and if necessary, further action may be taken."

The commission said the following airlines are part of the ban:

Todd Boehly-led group agrees deal to buy Chelsea Football Club

https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/06/football ... index.html

Chelsea Football Club announced Friday that terms have been agreed for a new ownership group, led by Todd Boehly, to buy the club in a deal worth more than $5 billion.

Boehly owns stakes in the MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.

Chelsea says the sale is expected to complete later this month, “subject to all necessary regulatory approvals.”

A press release on Chelsea’s website reads: “Of the total investment being made, £2.5b ($3.08b) will be applied to purchase the shares in the club and such proceeds will be deposited into a frozen UK bank account with the intention to donate 100% to charitable causes as confirmed by Roman Abramovich. UK Government approval will be required for the proceeds to be transferred from the frozen UK bank account.

“In addition, the proposed new owners will commit £1.75b ($2.16bn) in further investment for the benefit of the club. This includes investments in Stamford Bridge, the Academy, the Women’s Team and Kingsmeadow and continued funding for the Chelsea Foundation.”

I guess this qualifies.

Here is the link to an article on the sanctions supporting Ukraine and the countries NOT involving themselves in this action:-

https://dailysceptic.org/2022/05/09/why ... ed-russia/

From the article; "Another illustration of the West’s double standards, in the eyes of many non-Western observers, is how differently it has reacted to Russia’s treatment of Ukraine versus Israel’s treatment of Palestine....Although non-Western leaders “largely sympathise with the plight of the Ukrainian people”, Parsi notes, they will not make costly sacrifices to uphold a ‘rules-based international order’ the West doesn’t bother to uphold itself."
