UK Overseas Voting Change

#1 Post by llondel » Tue Jan 16, 2024 7:39 pm

It appears that some of us might be able to vote in UK elections again.
Around two million more British citizens living overseas will be able to register for a vote in general elections following a rule change.

Previously, people who left the UK more than 15 years ago lost their right to vote.

However, this rule has now been abolished under the Election Act 2022.

Affected British citizens will now be able to register in the last constituency they were signed up in before leaving the UK.

Once on the electoral register they will also be able to donate to political parties and campaigners.

Children who left the UK before voting age, can register using the address of their parent or guardian.

As long as they leave my state pension alone, I shall continue to let those who live there chose who governs them without me sticking my oar in.

Hmm - has this move been coordinated with HMRC? Those overseas that have achieved the increasingly difficult to obtain "non-resident for tax" status need to be very careful to minimise or avoid the "ties test" if they make visits back to the U.K.

"On the electoral roll" is not in the current table of tie criteria...

:-?

However, it has been the legal status for some time that HMRC is not bound by any policy or previous cases in determining tax status, especially with regard to inheritance tax.
They are quite literally a law unto themselves, and with inheritance tax they know full well one is too dead to argue.
