I admire you for adopting a dog of certain age. I have heard tales of dogs turning mad for no apparent reason - only to discover later a bad experience in a previous life triggered a violent reaction with the new owners.

We brought 2 cats to SA with us, and had custom flight crates built for them.
We gave one away, the other is still in a serviceable condition after 37 years.
Dunno about not being able to sense time, they seem to be able to tell when it's time for regular things to happen, e.g. walk, someone arrives home at the same time each day etc. Whether they can tell duration or not I don't know, but the important thing to them is that you will come home.
Confirmed that with a local chemist here who doubles as a vet. Dogs can't tell duration but the can tell time due to sun brightness and shadow, i.e. if it's a cloudy day they may front for grub earlier than usual.
BTW I notice that all animalry here are referred to as she. Does anyone own a boy dog or cat?

Two of our cats are boys. Three dogs, two cats and a tortoise are not.

Current hound - female.
This is a photo of Myf after visit from mobile dog wash lady. Being a rescue dog, parentage is unknown. Really intrigued by black stripes. What breeds are likely to have such? She is believed to be Australian Kelpie crossed with Border Collie. Her hair whilst quite long is more like a Terrier's - very wiry.

Our last dog certainly worked on cues. TV programme, The Bill, used to end at 9pm and I would take dog for a walk to collect wife from work. One day she, the dog, came trotting through ready to go when the signature tune played but she got it wrong. IT was the advert break. She would go to bed at 10, winter or summer.
Our new dog, 15 months has a routine too but largely reactive. Time of evening, freezer door opened, time for ice cream. In the morning she stays in bed until breakfast is ready.

My daughter taught her hand signals to which she responded and she would look back as we walked her off-lead for 'instruction'.
Who said that you couldn't teach old dogs new tricks?
When we had 3 dogs the deaf one would watch the young dog for cues. The young dog also alerted the old one.
Last dog went deaf and made sure of not missing out by watching us. But previously she realised I was deaf too and would nudge me rather than whine or yip.

Number One House Dog, a Border Collie, can tell the time from a clock.
Postie comes at five to eleven and she (the dog) watches the clock until the two hands align. Then she knows it's time to go and warn the Number One Guard Dog that it's time to wait at the gate to 'greet' the Postie.
When she was learning her self-taught trick, she sometimes got confused at ten to ten, but she soon learned to be a bit more precise in reading the clock because GD got pissed off at the silly bitch's false alarm.
I know it's not a body clock thing because she always gets it right on the first Monday after the clocks go forward/back.
On Sundays she ignores the clock because she can hear the distant church bells at quarter to eleven and knows that Postie never comes on Sundays.
GD knows that when HD tells him that Postie is coming, he must be nice. If he doesn't get that warning, he goes back into Police Alsatian mode and is quite likely to try to rip the Postie's lungs out.
It'd be fun to see a video of Slasher watching this pet:
I sat intently watching that pet and pawed the screen a lot trying to pull down those various bits n pieces she was donning. Barked out of frustration when this wasn't working.

These two have certainly taken to each other. The one in the back is Nelson, he's about 4, and the little chap in the front is supposedly half JR and half Springer, he's about two months old.
