11-year-girl is lone survivor of Michigan plane crash

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/11 ... h-n1283867

An 11-year-old girl was the only survivor of a plane crash on Saturday on Beaver Island, an island on Lake Michigan, according to authorities and local reports.

The commercial aircraft, carrying the five passengers, was arriving at Welke Airport, just off Michigan’s northern peninsula, when it crashed, according to the Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office.

A tweet from the U.S. Coast Guard said that two of the passengers survived, but later reports from officials stated four people, including the girl's father, died.

The girl was airlifted to McLaren Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan.

As she was being transported, medical personnel began giving her chest compressions, according to the Coast Guard's tweet.

Officials said they're still in the process of contacting the victims' families and have not released the identities of those involved in the crash.

It was not immediately clear what caused the twin-engine Britten-Norman plane to crash.

Beaver Island plane crash leaves child as only survivor

https://www.freep.com/story/news/2021/1 ... 608355002/

A plane crash on Beaver Island has left four dead and a little girl as the lone survivor.

According to initial reports, the Island Airways 1:30 p.m. flight on Saturday, Nov. 13, resulted in the fatalities of the pilot and three other passengers. The passengers are reported to be Gaylord realtor Mike Perdue and new-to-the-island Kate Leese and Adam Kendall, who were planning a vineyard in the area. All were lost in the crash, including two dogs, except Perdue's 11 year-old child, the lone survivor, who has been severely injured and life-flighted to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

U.S. Coast Guard officials in Charlevoix confirmed the crash of the twin-engine Britten-Norman commuter plane on Beaver Island Saturday afternoon. Coast Guard helicopter 6008 was conducting training when they received the emergency transmission from Beaver Island.

They were able to see debris from the crash on the island and local emergency medical teams in response to the scene of the accident.

The coast guard helicopter airlifted two people — one adult male and one female child — with only the child surviving.

A single-engine commuter plane crashed on Beaver Island on Saturday.
Officials said plane crashes in the area are uncommon. This is the first crash of Island Airways, according to historical data.
Another area airline suffered a crash in February of 2001, which resulted in the death of the pilot and one passenger while a mother and her three children survived. They waited to be rescued in frigid winter temperatures for over 15 hours, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune at the time.

Beaver Island is located approximately 32 miles from the City of Charlevoix on Michigan's lower peninsula. With a year round population of approximately 600 people, it is the largest island in Lake Michigan.

This story will be updated online at www.petoskeynews.com as more information becomes available.

Must be a very old ad, long time since any of that fleet has been "modern" PA23 first introduced 1954, BN2 Islander 1960's. But they still can fly very well.

Their media consultants probably told them that "modern" sounds safer and more assuring than "over sixty years old".

Loganair still use the Islander on inter-island flights up here in Orkney. Today storm F10 winds forced cancellation of ferries and incoming flights from Inverness & Edinburgh diverted - the Islanders flew to their usual timetable in the Northern Isles of Stronsay, Sanday, Eday, North Ronaldsway & Westray

I have something over 1,000hrs between Islander and Trilander, they are certainly very good at what they were designed for.

I have many hours on both the piston and the turbine. Great aircraft. Sir Norman was a neighbour and drinking mate but it was his brother who put aircraft together.

Just looked him up. No longer with us. At the Royal Air Force Club he was listed as Flying Officer.
