Light twins When two engines aren't enough!

#1 Post by Cacophonix » Mon Jul 03, 2017 8:50 am

I was apt to think about the false sense of security having another engine on some types of light twin when reading the following news. As any pilot knows the low power of some light twins makes factors such as weight and balance , density altitude, flying technique, currency, recurrent engine out training etc. even more critical when flying in such wee beasties. I was surprised to see such a bad outcome on a C310 as they are relatively keen to climb on one engine but clearly factors militated against such a happy outcome in this unfortunate case.

These folks were lucky to get out of this one alive.

There is a school of thought that says the more engines an a/c has, the greater the chance of one of them developing a snag.

Only 2 pax on board he should have been able to climb away on one easily. Perhaps tried to turn back before gaining altitude.

Very professional Mayday call - much. Perhaps his handling skills were of the same calibre.

Simple statistics - exactly twice the chance of one out of two developing a fault as one out of one.

But 4 Merlin's were more reliable than 2 Vultures!
