Was this guy within today's rules/guidelines towing a large a/c without anyone watching his wing-tips/engine clearance?

When we were moving Valiant's about with a tug, there were always extra bodies to indicate such clearances.

At a well known airline, stands are checked before a tow on, that elevator should never have been left there.
When all else fails, read the instructions.

Woody,
That's a given, but it was left there.

The problem was the tug driver assumed all was clear he should of checked and/or been advised/guided into the stand.

Six of one ....
Presume he is towing from remote parking, could be a considerable distance and at a place like Schipol high speed tow required to alleviate congestion so no "wing men" couldn't keep up.
The stand should not have been there.
Bad judgement on the part of the tug driver and the brake man as the stand is obviously well closer to the center line of the stand than the wingspan.

It was 'unfortunate' that the obstruction was in line with the engine.
The wing would have been above the object.
