A fair sentence, I'd say. He'll be out in nine months.

Just long enough a sentence to send a signal to others like him that his behaviour is unacceptable to civilised society, but not so unduly harsh as to trigger an appeal against the sentence.

Finely judged, I'd say.

Now, will the CAA start to clamp down on N-reg aircraft routinely being based and used in the UK by UK-based owners and flown by Brit pilots? Perhaps, perhaps not.

Now, Let's see... Who is the boss of the department of transport, or whatever it's called nowadays? Does he perhaps own and operate an aircraft in the UK under a false flag of convenience such as an N-reg? :-?

Craig Murray's Appeal is expected to start 12 months after completion of his 8 months sentence.

Which reminds me, though off topic, He's due out of Saughton Prison at 10:00 today.

The latest from the inquest; https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... crash.html

The suggestion that CO detectors should be made mandatory sounds sensible to me.

If the cause was due to a CO leak from the engine, is it a problem that can be detected during a maintenance inspection?

A leak can be picked up during maintenance, but as little as 10% CO hemoglobin saturation, can cause impairment, and such low concentrations may missed in a simple ground check, even if such a test is undertaken. The effects are amplified by the lower O2 concentrations at altitude as well. A really insidious problem.

I have only once suffered the beginning of CO poisoning and this was at 4 feet below sea level in the engine compartment of a boat with a leaking exhaust baffle. Started to get pins and needles in my hands, and feeling odd, well odder than normal! ;)))

Certainly does make sense. A maintenance 'check' is a bit like testing a radio - yes it works NOW but will it work when I need it? It is quite possible for a fully checked aircraft to have an exhaust manifold leak on the next take-off if a weld or joint fails.

True, and of course, often issues like this are caused by the maintenance check itself.

I am surprised that most light aircraft checklists don't include a CO sensor check as part of the I/FREDA/I checks...

One of those little square cardboard CO detectors with the wee indicator circle, fixed to somewhere suitable in the cockpit with double-sided tape, sounds like a good investment.

- Mrs ex-A's point was that there appears to be no requirement to even fit one let alone check it!

Yes, she is quite right, it should be mandatory. So saying, the outfit whose aircraft I have flown in the last couple of years have been fitted with sensors, but if they are not looked at then they are not much good either.

Here is the UK CAA's take on this subject.

https://www.caa.co.uk/general-aviation/ ... -aviation/

Their "survey", makes for interesting reading.

Emiliano Sala and pilot were overcome by toxic carbon monoxide fumes from light aircraft's faulty exhaust before fatal plunge into the English Channel, concludes jury at plane crash inquest

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... crash.html

Emiliano Sala and his pilot were overcome by toxic carbon dioxide fumes from the light aircraft's faulty exhaust before fatally crashing into the English Channel, a jury has concluded today.

Sala, 28, and pilot David Ibbotson, 59, died when their private single-engine Piper Malibu aircraft went down around 22 nautical miles north-west of Guernsey on January 21, 2019.

The Argentinian striker was being transported to Cardiff having just agreed a £15 million deal from French club Nantes, but contact was lost with the aircraft shortly after 8pm.

Sala's body was recovered from wreckage of the plane found on the seabed, but Mr Ibbotson's remains have never been found.

He died from head and chest injuries, but was deeply unconscious having been poisoned by fumes from the plane's faulty exhaust system.

Jurors at Bournemouth Town Hall today returned a lengthy conclusion after deliberating for nearly two days.

They said: 'Emiliano Sala died as a consequence of injuries sustained in an aircraft crash where the flight was operated as a commercial flight without the required authorisation, certifications or permissions being in place.'

Unimportant details to a 'reporter'.

Co/Co2
A little of one or a lot of the other can be lethal.
If that didn't get them the impact with the di-hydrogen oxide would have finished the job.

Unbelievable that any sane pilot would have seen fit to fly the aircraft with such qualms about the aircraft! The pilot's fatalism points to external factors, financial stress for example, causing him to chance his arm, and his passenger's life! Truly shocking!

An outfit from hell!
My necessaries are embark'd: farewell. Adieu! I have too grieved a heart to take a tedious leave.
