Looking at footage, it's a miracle that anyone got out.

Looks like a very controlled and rapid evacuation through 1R. Well done. In the US they would still be getting their bags from the overhead or taking cell-phone footage.

The BBC link was 41 dead, 5 in hospital, from 73 + 5 crew onboard. One FA died.

Passenger video from inside - well, how it must have felt to be there.

Some say evacuation took 55 sec (of the 'nomal' 90), but passengers 'saving' their hand luggage are blamed for the ones who died in the tail section.

The Americans were obviously sitting in the tail section. Some say evacuation took 55 sec (of the 'nomal' 90), but passengers 'saving' their hand luggage are blamed for the ones who died in the tail section.

Meeja now saying that the fire was caused by a lightning strike.
Sounds rather improbable.

Watching the evacuation through 1R, things seemed to be going well until there was a gap of several seconds with no-one coming down the slide, followed by someone holding a suitcase.
Re: Sukhoi Superjet in flames in Sheremetyevo
Sounds extremely improbably, particularly as the a/c was only a year old, so wiring, insulation, fuel lines, etc unlikely to have been in poor condition, unless they'd had French 'workers' on it, which is unlikely.Meeja now saying that the fire was caused by a lightning strike.
Sounds rather improbable.
With the 'holes in the cheese' theory though, it's possible.

I wonder if that suitcase carrying person can be charged with Manslaughter, or its Russian equivalent?

This fire was an engine fire. You do not get that from a lightning strike.
When are they going to put automatic locks on overhead lockers to stop folk opening them from say top of decent before on stand?

Anyone goes for a suitcase when escaping a flight I'm on is going to be persuaded of the error of their ways in very short order. The John Prescott approach.
Re: Sukhoi Superjet in flames in Sheremetyevo
Change to the safety briefing, perhaps?
"In the event of an emergency evacuation, those wishing to save their baggage should remain seated until all those who wish to save themselves have left the aircraft. Please note that this latter category includes the crew."

Re: Sukhoi Superjet in flames in Sheremetyevo
I do not think there was an in-flight fire. Watch the RT video of the landing
It looks as if the fire started when the a/c hit after a humungeous bounce on landing which damaged the engines or fuel tanks. I assume some other problem caused the early return.

Re: Sukhoi Superjet in flames in Sheremetyevo
It has been suggested that in the event of an emergency requiring evacuation the overhead bins should be locked. Not a good idea, first of all it's something else for the crew to deal with, and knowing the stupidity of the human species, it would make things worse as some idiots would try to force or break the bins open.

Which is a very good reason to dress properly, put wallet, passport etc in a pocket and not overhead locker. I have seen one, and only one, pair of trousers with shin pockets. Ideal for a nutty bar and a paperback.Fox3WheresMyBanana wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2019 2:48 pmAnyone goes for a suitcase when escaping a flight I'm on is going to be persuaded of the error of their ways in very short order. Photographer jacket. Plenty of pockets of all sizes inside and outside. Not much heat load and, if you do take it off, it tucks alongside the seat so that you can grab it and run.
Travelling in the US mine holds wallet, cash in another pocket, airline tickets, cell-phone, micro-music player, noise cancelling earphones etc. Only problem is remembering which pocket in which you put which item cos' I'm disorganised as soon as I leave the house. Oh, and remembering to remove the left-over ammo. from the last range trip.
And I'm with Fox, if anybody reaches for the overhead and exposes his torso he's going down.

When I was a frequent traveller, I had large, zipped pockets added to the inside of a light windcheater.Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2019 5:49 pmWhich is a very good reason to dress properly, put wallet, passport etc in a pocket and not overhead locker. Sorry, posted this before I had seen boac post #15 herein, same video.
Go to post No. 253 and view the video, there doesn't appear to be an engine fire prior to the heavy touchdown ,but then what do I know, I wasn't there.
