In all this, I feel sorry for the Iranian people, by and large immensely cultured, educated, and civilised people whose beautiful country is run by a cabal of madmen.
True. I told the Iranian expat blokes back in the Gulf from day one of Tehran’s actions (suppression of street protests) that the bloody govt in no way represents its people, and please for chrissake stop feeling ashamed being a Persian (which they do).

I suppose that this is one problem that can't be attributed to Boeing!

The 1st good news they've had for a while.

TGG/BOAC, not for one moment do I suggest no one will be punished but to go back to my previous message. At night we observed a column of troops marching along the airport perimeter berm. One soldier stopped every 30 yards or so - no chance of being distracted by conversation. We were told that if any were found sleeping they would pay the ultimate penalty. That was a different regime.

If an example is to be made it will probably not be the watch commander or any one with technical skills. If anyone is executed it will not be for shooting down the aircraft but for embarrassing the mullahs.

As you said, someone's head had to go but almost certain well before the buck reached its stop.

Fair number of flights over Iran right now, although dense stream over Iraq and South of the Iran FIR and others over Tajikistan.

We are back to the discussion we had about the Ukrainian airspace and why that was not closed 'internationally'. Difference there was the the (faulty) 'intelligence' had declared there was no threat weapon-wise above FL230 - wrong.

I join others now in calling for a complete commercial airspace closure whenever hostilities break out. It is the only safe way and we owe it to the pax and crews.

Compensation?
What are the odds that Iran will compensate the airline and the families of the victims?

There is a picture of what is left of the front fuselage/cockpit of the jet, but no indication of where it was found.

I would guess that due to the amount of burning it was probably at the main crash site?

Apparently, the aircraft was struck directly under the cockpit by one of the missiles, killing the flight crew.

I had not seen this BBC item which claims that the on-site Ukranian accident team discovered the fragmentation holes early and this, with photographic evidence, may have forced the Iranians to come clean. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/video_and_au ... it-ukraine

Amazingly the arrivals and departures board at Tehran airport is reasonably active with quite a few major airlines operating through.

No western airlines though, unless you count TK as European and I certainly don't. Surprised to see Ukrainian still operating there.

Indeed. At least it looks pretty 'quick' for the pilots, but heaven knows.................

As I have said before, I was a little surprised that so much of the aircraft made it to the main crash site, based on my somewhat dated understanding of expanding rod and fragmentation warheads. I would have expected a greater disintegration in flight.

During my four sojourns in Iran, two of which were very lengthy, I didn't bother my arse to learn Farsi. I got by just fine with English and Arabic. I therefore cannot vouch for the accuracy of the textual translation in this press conference. Nevertheless, I commend it to 'the House'.

Compare and contrast his openness, honesty, decency and contrition with the mendacity, truculence and arrogance of his counterpart Admiral Crowley after the comparable mass murder of IR655.

I doubt very much that the missile oficers responsible for this recent mass murder will be awarded medals "for exceptionally meritorious conduct".
